NESTLE BOYCOTT

While Nestlé baby milk sales increase, 1.5 million infants die every year
because they are not breast fed. The UK Nestlé boycott focuses on Nescafé
and is the UK's best supported consumer boycott. Pauline Kisanga,
Coordinator of the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) in Africa
said: "The Nestlé boycott is very important. It should continue because
Nestlé continues to violate the Code". 

Earlier this year a former Nestlé Pakistan employee, Syed Aamar Raza,
presented documentary evidence in the UK Parliament showing how he was
instructed by company officials to bribe doctors to promote Nestlé baby
milks. 

Saatchi & Saatchi suggested that Nestlé should counter the bad publicity by
going on offensive showing the benefit of its donations to charities. Soon
afterwards four UK charities (Shelter, Kids Club Network, Macmillan and
British Red Cross) received £250,000 each linked to promotion of Nescafé.

OGONI ANNIVERSARY

November 10 marks the 5th Anniversary of the "judicial murder" of Ken Saro
Wiwa and his eight colleagues in Nigeria.

Justice is yet to be done for the Ogonis and the Niger Delta people.  Ogoni
people still languish in poverty, deprivation, marginalisation and
environmental devastation.

ENDING VIOLENCE

White Ribbon Day (November 25th) focuses on efforts to end violence against
women. The reality of violence against women is shocking:

- one in four women experience domestic violence 
at some time during their lives
(British Medical Association 1998)

- globally, men's violence causes more death and disability amongst 
women under 44, than cancer, malaria or war 
(World Bank Discussion Paper 255)

- the police in the UK receive 1300 calls from victims of violence in 
the home every day: 81% of these are from women attacked by men
(Violence Research Programme, University of London, 2000).

KEEPING SECRETS

Campaigners claim that UK security laws are an "international disgrace". A
new report from ARTICLE 19 and Liberty uncovers a raft of mechanisms
invoked by UK governments to suppress information, obtain documents, compel
disclosure of sources, and trace and punish whistle blowers.

Andrew Puddephatt, Executive Director of ARTICLE 19, and John Wadham,
Director of LIBERTY, said:

"The UK's disregard for the public interest and preference for gagging and
suppression of information over accountability and democratic scrutiny is an
international disgrace. There is a clear pattern of official harassment of
those coming forward with embarrassing information on the activities and
conduct of the security and intelligence services".

CHILD SUICIDES

The Guarani Indians have one of the highest suicide rates in the world,
with children as young as nine taking their own lives. One of the most
numerous Indian peoples in Brazil, the Guarani have lost over 95% of their
land during the last 200 years. The loss of land has led to suicide,
illness and malnutrition.

A new report reveals that: 

- Brazil is the only country in South America which continues to violate
international law by not recognising its tribal peoples' land rights
- The genocide of Brazil's Indians still continues, with two convictions in
the last decade. 
- There are at least 50 groups of uncontacted Indians in Brazil today
- Brazil's Indians are still considered to be minors in law.

This April 200 military police, armed with machine guns, illegally entered
an indigenous reserve in Brazil and destroyed a monument built to
commemorate the five million Indians who have died since colonisation.

Friends of the Earth plan to build a dike around world leaders to save the
Climate Treaty. The protest in The Hague will take place on November 18.
