BURMA

On 2 September Aung San Suu Kyi disappeared and no independent
verification has since been received of her well-being or whereabouts. Her
house is blockaded by riot police. Senior members of her NLD Party are
under house arrest, their phones have been cut and diplomats have been
denied access to them. There are indications that the regime is preparing
a fabricated case against the NLD that could be used as a pretext for
outlawing the party.
The Burma Campaign is holding a demonstration on Tuesday 12 September
12.30pm-2pm outside the Burmese Embassy, 19A Charles St, off Berkley Square,
London.

"Silence is not an option when a military government detains incommunicado
the leader of a legitimate political party", according to ARTICLE 19, an
international freedom of expression organisation.

Burma and the Law is at http://www.article19.org/docimages/443.htm.

CAR FREE DAY

On 21st September many cities around the world are taking part in World
Car Free Day.

Car Free Days aim to reclaim our cities and communities from the burden of
cars by filling the streets with a celebration of people, music and colour
and diversity rather than pollution, congestion and the threat of death.

GLOBAL NETWORKS

The Simputer Trust in India is working towards a low-cost mobile
computing device (Simputer) for the rural masses. They plan to use widely
available, free public-domain software for the operating system and to develop
their own applications.

Meanwhile, a founder of Africa Online is hoping Internet access will
transform business and communication in the region.
On a continent with few available computers and high illiteracy rates,
Africa Online has managed to connect almost 100,000 clients over the past
two years through 600 low-cost Internet centers across the continent.
