POLICE BULLDOZE 2 BANGLADESH TOWNS

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) - Police on Sunday bulldozed thousands of
huts in two shanty towns in the Bangladesh capital, leaving
thousands homeless, officials said.

Police acted two days after a police official patrolling the
area was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen. Two other police
were injured during Friday's attack.

Authorities said the slums have become dens for robbers and
muggers of the capital city. At least two million of Dhaka's nine
million people live in shanty towns.

``Please, don't destroy my home'', Julekha Begum, 50, pleaded
with police as a bulldozer plowed through her hut. Police also
demolished nearly 500 small shops selling grocery and vegetables in
the area.

A fire broke out during the demolition and gutted at least 25
huts of bamboo splits and polyethylene.

Many of the new homeless began looking for shelter along the
streets in Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital, or crowded the local
railroad station.

Officials said police leveled at least 8,000 huts in Dhaka's
eastern Demra and neighboring Sabujbagh districts.
