Nanjundaswamy for withdrawal of amendment to Land Reforms Act
DH News Service
BANGALORE, June 10
Noted economist and President of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha Prof M D
Nanjundaswamy today demanded that the Centre should cancel the amendment to
the Land Reforms Act in order to protect the interests of the farmers.
He was speaking at a seminar on land reforms organised by the Land Reforms
Silver Jubilee Celebration Committee on the occasion of golden jubilee
celebrations of the Kagodu farmers' movement. He pointed out that the
provisions in the amendment to the Land Reforms Act are against the
interests of farmers. "The amendment permits purchase of agricultural land
by non-agriculturists, lease of agricultural lands, and delimitation of
agricultural land ownership. This will enable the multinational companies to
purchase farmers' land to any possible extent. Then, the very purpose of
enacting the Land Reforms Act will be defeated," he said.
He alleged that successive governments in the State did not implement the
Land Reforms Act properly due to which there had been a rise in the number
of landless farmers.
He said that some of the rules and guidelines were so stringent that several
farmers were still unable to acquire their land documents. He also alleged
that the procedure followed by the government in estimating the price of
crops was skewed owing to which farmers were suffering losses.
Prof Nanjundaswamy accused the Congress government in the State of "playing
with the future" of small farmers. "Biotechnology will sound the death knell
to at least 75 per cent of the small farmers in the State.
The introduction of biotechnology will affect the naturally evolving species
while providing scope for genetically altered crops", he said.
He appealed to the government to study the pros and cons of biotechnology
before introducing its applications in the field of agriculture.
Forest Minister K H Ranganath, Kagodu movement leader H Ganapatiappa, noted
economist Dr K Venkatagiri Gowda, former Chairman of the Backward Classes
Commission Raviverma Kumar and Konandur Venkappa Gowda were present.
