DEPARTMENT FOR ENVIRONMENT, FOOD AND RURAL AFFAIRS

9 June 2001

Secretary of State at the new Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs Margaret Beckett started work today.

The new department will spearhead a major new drive on green issues
and the countryside.

It will take over responsibility for agriculture and the food
industry from the former Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food.

It will take on the environment, rural development, countryside,
wildlife and sustainable development responsibilities of the former
Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. It will
also take on responsibility for animal welfare and hunting from the
Home Office.

It will sponsor the Environment Agency, the Countryside Agency, and
English Nature.

Mrs. Beckett, speaking at a photocall at her new office in Nobel
House, Smith Square said:

"This new department will play a vital role in taking forward the
Government's agenda for its second term. It will adopt a truly
joined-up approach to all aspects of our environment to ensure a high
quality of life, vibrant and sustainable rural communities and a food
chain that works together to meet the changing demands of consumers.

"I am delighted to be leading this important work and look forward to
tackling the challenges my new department will be addressing."
