Memorials 'cluttering' top of Ben Nevis to be removed

MEMORIALS on the top of Britain's highest mountain are to be removed
because there is too much clutter on the summit.

The Nevis Partnership, a multi-agency group looking after Ben Nevis,
says many of the plaques may be to people with no connection with the
mountain, or even animals.


The group wants to remove all non-essential plaques and has launched an
appeal to trace the owners to return them. Future tributes can be placed
in a specially created garden of contemplation in Glen Nevis.

In 2001 the mountain management programme proposed to remove non-
essential cairns, memorials and other artefacts from the high plateau
and summit area. Since then all but a few cairns have been removed, with
just the original Peace Cairn at the summit and some considered to be
vital navigational aids left in place.

The group is now turning its attention to commemorative plaques, which
range from works of art attached to rock to a few words painted on a
stone left lying on the ground.

James Weir, director of the Nevis Partnership, said: "Of the 50 or so
plaques that have been located on the summit plateau, in only two cases
is sufficient information available for there to be a reasonable chance
of identifying those for whom the memorials were placed on the mountain.

"It might well be the case that many of the plaques commemorate pet
animals."

All unclaimed plaques will be stored for up to five years and any that
are still unclaimed after that period will then be disposed of.

A collective memorial will be opened in Glen Nevis at a non-religious
ceremony on Sunday, 27 August, and a virtual book of remembrance will be
created on the Nevis Partnership website.
