RURAL ART SPACE
A one day symposium as part of/ Why We Left The Village and Came Back
(Wed 17 Jan 2007, 10.00 to 17.00, Old Market Hall, Shrewsbury, Shropshire)

'Why We Left the Village and Came Back' is a two month programme of
displays, films and events curated by the artist initiative
/www.myvillages.org/ and Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery. The project
is showcasing and demonstrating a variety of current art practices that
specifically address the rural environment, both as a social and physical
space and as a political and historical context.

The symposium will look at current art and curatorial practice within a
rural context and explore the different spaces and approaches associated
with it. The day is split in two parts: A morning session with
presentations around the current debate on cultural regeneration, both
urban and rural, and a critical reflection on the role of art practices
and curation within regeneration schemes. The afternoon is organised in
workshops with presentations by a wide variety of practitioners, offering
the opportunity for focused group discussions.

There will also be an opportunity to analyse what the project has so far
achieved in Shropshire and to propose new curatorial strategies for the
rural art space in the county, which may be developed through the
media/maker/ /Rurality /programme.

The symposium is a partnership venture between myvillages.org, Shrewsbury
Museum and Art Gallery and the School of Art and Design, University of
Wolverhampton.

There are only very few places left for the day. If you would like to
attend, please contact Adrian Plant at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery
