JOHN Evans was enjoying his life by the Fitzroy River yesterday,
playing cards with his mates and wondering what all the fuss was about.
John was the first of the riverbank squatters to put up a tent and has
been living there for the past 18 months.
As a team of six plain clothes police officers rifled through the
tented village yesterday afternoon looking for drugs and alcohol, he
hardly looked up from his hand of cards........

RESIDENTS of Rockhampton's Quay Street have had enough of the public
drunkenness, fighting, swearing and sex happening right on their
doorsteps.
Yesterday, as the southern bank of the Fitzroy River, between the
Fitzroy Motor Boat Club and CSR Readymix, was turned into a tent city
by a group of indigenous people (pictured), residents spoke out about
the problems that had plagued their neighbourhood for years and the
fear it had again returned.
One resident, who did not want to be identified, told The Morning
Bulletin she had made calls in the past to police and local government
representatives asking them to deal with illegal campers...........
