Wiltshire gang guilty of £1m caravan thefts

A Wiltshire-based gang which stole caravans and
other vehicles worth more than £1m have been convicted of theft.

The gang spent the proceeds on gold, jewellery,
crystal and china, Winchester Crown Court heard.

They were arrested in Chiseldon in October 2007
as part of an investigation which had begun in 2005.

Martin Ward, 20, Charlie Ward, 27, Martin
McDonagh, 29, and John McDonagh, 31, also pleaded
guilty to benefit fraud and were remanded in custody.

'Irreplaceable possessions'

Martina Ward admitted benefit fraud.

Speaking after the case Det Insp Matt Davey said
the defendants were part of an organised crime group.

"The court has heard how this wasn't simply the
thefts of caravans but also the theft of people's
personal and often irreplaceable possessions," he said.

"Close to £1m worth of property including
vehicles, cash, jewellery, china and crystal were
recovered as part of this investigation.

"It is evident that this group had a profound
affect on theft claims within the insurance
industry who reported a 47% reduction in caravan
thefts in the year following their arrest," he added.
