To :Sarah Swaddling and producer Martin Poynz Roberts.

Unreality is the feeling that this listener is
left with after listening to this morning’s Radio 4, ‘Farming Today’.

Agriculture in UK
and in US is rapidly shedding jobs and has been for fifty years .

Capital grants and mechanisation are the order of the day.

The rocketing price of land and small farms being
incorporated in larger units - all these factors mean that it is difficult for
young people to find employment in the sector-

Not the lack of motivation of young people as suggested
to-day on FT..

Why might vets
want government to pay grants to farmers
to improve animal welfare? Might it
be to fund vets’ rocketing fees? The vet who made the proposal was not
asked.

‘To feed the worlds growing population’ …is a mantra on FT .
The last to intone was Mr Peter
Kendall. Farming . This morning it was
Sarah Swaddling. To-day should explore
such an important subject and ask ,

“Why does affluent Britain
import 40 % of its food ?” “Why does EU
from time to time build up a surplus of some cereals and dump them and so destroy the market for overseas farmers, or convert them to animal feed , or
destroy the cereals?”

“Why recently pay UK
farmers to set aside 1 million acres , and pay
them to plant forests on land taken out of agriculture ?” These don’t suggest concern for the world’s growing population

It’s a big subject, oft repeated but never explored by
Farming Today .

Without these answers
FT presenters repeating the
mantra ‘feeding the world’s growing
population’ is cliché , but that would be the most generous interpretation
for FT .

Coming from the Peter
Kendall stable, it is propaganda,
disguising the harm done to

The world’s growing
population by misdirecting £1bn
to NFU millionaire members from British taxpayers and attempting to
misguide listeners.
