Land reform offers potential to assess farm business

BY engaging more with the communities about them, farmers could bring greater commercial and social value to their businesses.
That was the claim of Dr Alison Elliot, chairman of the Land Reform Review Group, which was appointed by Ministers last year to look at the benefits of land reform in Scotland.
A principal concern for the group, which includes vice-chairmen Prof Jim Hunter and Dr Sarah Skerratt, is to look at the workings of the 2003 Land Reform Act.
With an interim report due to be sent to Government Ministers this month, and the final report expected at the end of the year, Dr Elliot said unlocking the potential of farmland and estates was a key element of their research.
She said: "Part of this is about how farms can engage with the community around them. For a long time farmers and land owners have tended to get on with their jobs and nothing else. But now they are starting to engage.
"Farmers and land owners are very much part of the community and fundamental to communities in many parts of Scotland."
Dr Elliot pointed to examples in Fife where one estate had created 23 business units in disused buildings across several sites. This allowed local businesses access to units in an area where a lot of suitable properties had been converted in to holiday lets.
Issues of community land ownership were also central to the review group's remit, but this was something which tended to be associated with the North West of the Scotland and the Western Isles. This was something which could spread to other areas if the opportunities were discussed.
She added: "We need farmers, land owners and communities engaged and having a conversation about the potential of the land. There might be good reasons why some fields can not be used by the community, but they will only understand that if it is explained to them and people are open about their farms and their businesses."
