Programme broadcast on BBC Radio-4 late-morning on Thursday 8th January 2015 narrated by actor Christopher Eccleston about the life and work of playwright and former docker and miner Jim Allen. Most recognised for this play "The Spongers" broadcast at the same time as Queen Elizabeth Saxe-Coburg's Silver Jubilee in 1977, the play, about the plight of a young mother with children and the devastating imact of welfare cuts in a society which increasingly views those who fall into economic stress and precarity as 'Spongers', coined the strap line "who are the real Spongers?". The play seems even more relevant today than nearly 40 years ago when it was first broadcast, in a time now of simultaneous austerity including heavy-handed welfare cuts and bankers bonuses
