Israel is set to seize a large tract of fertile
land in the occupied West Bank. According to
Israeli Defense Ministry, the political decision
has been already made and the territory is –
quote – “in the final stages of being declared
state lands”. The appropriation would cover 380
acres in the Jordan Valley – an area, where
Palestinians seek for a state. Israel has already
build settlements on those lands, and Jewish
settlers have for long farmed the territory under
Israeli civilian and military control.
Palestinian officials were quick to denounce
Israel’s decision, calling it a violation of
international law. Palestinians seek the
recognition of their independent state in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as
the capital, which is opposed by Israel. U.N.
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the
move, saying that it ran counter to the public
pronouncements of the Israeli government. John
Dugard, Professor Emeritus at the University of
Leiden and former Special Rapporteur to Human
Rights Council on Human rights in Occupied
Palestinian Territory, told Radio Sputnik, the
U.N. is unlikely to take any action against Israel’s move.
