Undercover police officers have spied on more than 1,000 political groups since 1968. However, no official list of these groups has been published.
This database is an attempt to compile such a list. It is a work in progress and will be updated as more information is made public. The aim is to make more visible the nature and scope of a covert operation that has spanned more than four decades.
The information has been compiled following investigations by the Guardian and the Undercover Research Group, a network of activists that scrutinises the covert infiltration of political movements. The group is also publishing a similar database.
The HN or EN ciphers have been allocated to individual officers at a public inquiry that is examining the infiltration.

According to the public inquiry, in October 2017, Straven denied conducting a sexual relationship while he was undercover with named women. The inquiry did not accept his denial. In April 2018, he admitted he had a sexual relationship with a woman, known as "Ellie", lasting months during his deployment. The inquiry attempted to obtain from him contact details for Ellie. He said that all he could provide was "a guess at an old email address". In August 2018, Ellie came foward and said she had had a sexual relationship with Straven in 1999-00 and had remained in touch with him. She said Straven had contacted her to say he had been an undercover officer in the Special Demonstration Squad and warned her that the inquiry may be in touch. She has told the inquiry that Straven deceived her into a sexual relationship that started in 2001 and lasted about a year.

In August 1971, the British government arrested and interned hundreds of people suspected of being involved in the IRA. Campaigners demanded their release and the withdrawal of British troops from Ireland. Little is known about his deployment. According to the public inquiry, "he resigned from the Metropolitan Police Service in the early 1980s. Subsequently he was arrested for the unauthorised possession of official documents. He was not prosecuted on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Thereafter, he undertook work in the private security sector in Asia."

He died from a blow to the head during a demonstration against the National Front in London. Police have confirmed that the Special Demonstration Squad collected information about the campaign to uncover the truth about his death.

The public inquiry is investigating why and how this officer used a second fake identity, Kevin Crossland. According to the inquiry, the use of this second name "does not appear to have been sanctioned" by his supervisors in the Special Demonstration Squad. The real Kevin Crossland died aged five in a plane crash in 1966. His relatives have described how Kevin was flying with his family from Luton aiport to go on holiday: "Kevin and his sister were very excited, they had packed their favourite toys to take with them. On the way to Luton airport, both were singing 'we are going to the summer holiday'." The plane crashed as it was coming in to land in the former Yugoslavia.

The campaign was formed to support and defend people who had been arrested or convicted after disturbances on the Broadwater Farm estate in London in 1985. It campaigned for Winston Silcott and two others to be released from jail. A photograph shows that Barker, an undercover officer in the Special Demonstration Squad, attended a demonstration outside Wormwood Scrubs prison in 1988 where the trio were jailed.

Police have been accused of concealing the presence of Rod Richardson and Jason Bishop from judges in the UK's highest court in a long-running legal case. In 2003, more than 120 campaigners were unlawfully detained and prevented from attending a rally against the Iraq war at an airbase in Fairford, Gloucestershire. They successfully fought a decade-long battle to uphold their right to protest. Richardson was, according to activists, on one of the coaches carrying campaigners to the protest that were stopped by police and forced to return home.
