Credits: Brought up going to synagogue in New York, Ron Mandel went 
on to lecture in International Relations and Politics at Northampton 
University, UK. Whilst understanding why so many Jews support the 
state of Israel he is convinced that being critical of Israeli abuse 
of Palestinian and Arab human rights does not necessarily make one 
'antisemitic'. So what is Zionism? Ron believes it was a natural 
reaction to the very real antisemitism seen in notorious episodes 
such as France's Dreyfus Affair around the turn of the twentieth 
century. Dreyfus was an artillery officer falsely accused of being a 
German spy in a highly publicised case and sent to devil's island, 
just because he was Jewish. Zionism was developed by Lord Balfour 
during the First World War through the Balfour Declaration. After a 
terrorist campaign against the Palestine British mandate after WWII 
1946 Jewish State was inaugurated in Tel-Aviv.
