Dear GreenNet users,

CODE RED VIRUS

You may have heard about a virus called CODE RED in the media over
the
last 24 hours.
We would like to reassure all of you that you having nothing to worry
about.

This worm virus has been around for some months now and potentially
affects only web servers running
Windows NT Server or Windows 2000 Server running Internet Information
Server (IIS) Software.  Microsoft made a security patch available
very quickly
and both GreenNet's web servers are fully secure.

Windows 3.1, 95, 98 Millennium Edition, NT Workstation, Windows 2000
and
Mac OS are completely unaffected

This virus poses no danger to your computers or email system nor will
it
make the Internet burn down or explode, as the FBI would have us
believe.

GreenNet does not believe that the Internet at large will be
affected, the
volume of emails circulating warning about the virus have more
potential
to slow down the Internet.


SIRCAM VIRUS

This virus is infecting Windows PC's at quite an alarming rate.  It
propagates by sending emails with virus infected attachments.  The
message
reads:

Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

See you later. Thanks

The message will have an attachment from the sender's computer with
the
extension
.bat, .com, .lnk, or .pif added to it.

Once infected your computer will send out virus-infected emails to
random
addresses from your address book.  The virus will attach random
documents
from Windows 'my documents' folder to the emails it sends out.


TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM VIRUSES WE CANNOT STRESS THESE POINTS
ENOUGH:

To protect yourself from viruses please make sure you
i) Install virus-checking software on your computer. 20 or 30 pounds
may
seem like a lot of money but it is a small price to pay for
protection.
Some viruses can destroy computer hardware which could cost far more
to
replace.  The cost of the extreme inconvenience and loss of
important work and data can be enormous.
ii) Make sure that the virus definitions are up to date (If you
register
your virus-checking software the company will usually remind you by
email
when new virus definitions are available)
iii) Never ever open attachments before scanning them with virus
software.
iv) Always be suspicious of attachments from any source even from
someone
you know.
v) If in any doubt don't open the attachment and send it to GreenNet
support, support at gn.apc.org, for examination.
