Dear GreenNet Users,

Here is some information about the W32.Nimida.A at mm virus also called
the
Nimda virus

GreenNet's webserver and the websites we host are all fully protected
from
this virus.

However this virus represents a real threat to people using Outlook
Express versions 5.01 and 5.5

If your computer is infected it will replace files on your computer
with
copies of itself. That will denegrate the performance of your
computer
and may lead to complete system failure. Once infected your computer
will
send out copies of itself to all the addresses in the address book.

Method of infection.

The virus can infect computers just by previewing a message in
Outlook
Express. Viruses usually rely on people opening infected attachments
to
spread.

The virus can also be transmitted by people downloading it from
infected
websites. Visitors to an infected website will be prompted to
download a
file with a .eml suffix.

To avoid infection.

First find out if you are using the affected version of outlook
express

To check which version of Outlook Express you are using Open Outlook
Express and choose the help menu then select 'about Outlook
Express'. The
version number will be in small text just above the text 'Copyright
(C)
Microsoft Corp.'

i) Email preview infection method

If you have version 5.01 or 5.5 microsoft have made a patch available
that
cures the email preview infection method.

Please go to

http//www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/secu
ity/bulletin/MS01-020.asp

and follow the instructions for downloading the patch.

ii) Downloading an infected .eml file

To avoid this method of infection do not download any files with a
.eml
suffix if you are prompted to whilst visiting a website.
As a general rule always be suspicious of websites that try to make
you
download unsolicited material.

This virus cannot infect Eduora or Internet Explorer

We would like to stress once more the importance of purchasing virus
software and keeping it up to date as the best method of avoiding
virus
infection.

Best Wishes

Phil Carr
