*Dear GreenNet friends,*
*December 2024*

It's time once again for our annual GreenNet winter newsletter. We'd
like to thank new and longstanding GreenNet users for your support in
2024 and wish you a very merry festive season.

We've been keeping busy this year as usual. In 2024 we welcomed new
customers from Footprint Co-op, launched new websites for our customers
and connected thousands of users in various ways - check the revived Day
in the life of GN <#numbers> below.

If you just want to see when our office is closed for the holidays,
please skip <#opening> to the end of this message.

      FreeAlaa

We'd like to remind you that not everyone can get together with
their family this year, and reiterate our support for Alaa's
family's campaign and urge you to Take Action
      <https://freealaa.net/take-action>!
Alaa's family have invited supporters to join them for a
Solidarity Vigil on day 81 of Laila's Hunger Strike opposite *10
Downing Street on Thursday 19th December from 5.30-7PM*

      Cheaper hosting!!

We're really pleased to announce that we are doubling web quotas
from the start of 2025, so if you have a web hosting account with
us, your web space quota will be twice as big!
We'll be in touch to let you know if that will affect your billing
      - if you are paying for extra webspace on one of our web hosting
accounts your bill might be reduced :)

      Ghost hosting

GreenNet has started offering Ghost, a new open source website
building tool aimed at journalists and bloggers (an alternative to
      Substack).
If that sounds interesting, welcome to get in touch
      <https://www.greennet.org.uk/content/contact-us> for details

      Mastodon at GreenNet.Social

If you're fed up with Twitter/X, why not try Mastodon? GreenNet is
running free a Mastodon instance for our network. Existing GreenNet
customers are welcome to register for free at: https://greennet.social

A day in the life of GN

Here's the sort of thing we get up to on a typical day at the
      GreenNet office:

  * Advising a charity comms person about nameservers while moving their
    website from a commercial provider,
  * A couple of calls to guide a broadband customer setting up a new
router, and liaising with BT about an upgrade for a horticultural
    centre,
  * Connecting up from 4 countries on our Jitsi video chat to discuss
Drupal data mapping for a large INGO online library project,
  * Using gitlab to plan a demo of the new editorial workflow for online
    editors at a daily newspaper,
  * Upgrading the publications section of an online academic website on
    non-extractive economics,
  * Participating with APC members around the globe on APC strategy and
    governance,
  * Briefing a freelance collaborator on a new website design project
for a small but mighty climate justice group,
  * Co-writing multilingual support documents with an international
peacebuilding organisation in several countries, working with their
international and local staff on their cloud platform and GN email
    setup.

Employment Rights Podcast from Institute of Employment Rights

      Please check out IER's podcast
      <https://www.ier.org.uk/the-ier-podcast/> on Employment Rights,
and support their work on the 2024 Employment Rights Bill.
