m.jpgOne of the fundamental roles of trade unions is to advance the terms
and conditions of workers. And it works. In workplaces where unions are
recognised for collective bargaining, workers enjoy a 16.7% lift in salary
and are more likely to enjoy safer workplaces, longer holidays, more
training and better pension provision.

But after 30 years of attack by governments and employers, only 1 in 3 UK
workers now have their terms and conditions negotiated by a union. In some
sectors, the ratio is considerably less. Coverage in the public sector
remains higher but the extensive privatisation of public services means that
anti-union attitudes of the private sector are increasingly permeating the
public sector.

So what is to be done if unions are to restore and extend the numbers of
workers covered by collective agreements and reverse the race to the bottom
in terms of pay, pensions and terms and conditions?

Unite and the Institute of Employment Rights are holding a FREE event on
Wednesday 18th January to provide a conference aimed at lay representatives
and Officials.

Speakers at the event include Len McCluskey, Keith Ewing, John Hendy, Tony
Burke, Heather Wakefield, Rob McGregor and Steve Hart. Details of the event
can be found in the Conference flyer

NOW OUT! Days of Action: the legality of protest strikes against government
cuts by Keith Ewing and John Hendy QC

inst-government-cuts-0>

Protests are in the news. Whether its pensions or occupations – people
throughout Europe are protesting against austerity measures that hit those
least responsible for the crisis, hardest. In this new publication from
IER, Keith Ewing and John Hendy consider whether a Day of Action called by
the TUC and trade unions, taking place on a weekday and intended to protest
at the government’s cuts and austerity measures, could be lawful in the UK
in the light of recent jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights.
They conclude that such a call and participation in the action should both
be protected by Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights and
Fundamental Freedoms. They go on to consider how that conclusion would
impact on domestic law. Available now from <http://www.ier.org.uk>
