Countdown to the People's Assembly...


The People's Assembly is finally here, opening at 9am tomorrow at Central Hall, Westminster.

The People's Assembly has been organised by an  <http://thepeoplesassembly.org.uk/supporters/> enormous consortium of trade unions, grassroots organisations, campaigners and think tanks - including the Institute of Employment Rights.


Make your way to the library at 11am to attend the  <http://thepeoplesassembly.org.uk/schedule/> Mobilising Millions: Re-Unionising the UK workshop, at which Chair of the IER John Hendy QC will be speaking. The topic of this session is how a collective response to the banking crisis, pay inequality, and increasing vulnerability in the workplace can be organised.

Public Sector

Councils have warned the government they cannot take further cuts without frontline services suffering or being lost.

 

More than 150 local authorities - some of which are Tory-run - have signed a letter to the Observer warning libraries, sports clubs and children's centres may be forced to close if Chancellor George Osborne swings the axe once more in the forthcoming spending review.  <http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/jun/16/councils-say-they-cant-take-more-cuts> Read more

 

The National Audit Office has also warned that pay cuts to civil servants will lead to a brain drain in the public sector, strengthening the view that public spending cuts are hurting rather than helping the country.  <http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/jun/19/civil-service-pay-cuts-deterred-applicants> Read more

 

Pay Inequality

The Scottish Trades Union Council has released new figures showing wages in Scotland have fallen substantially as a result of the recession and the financial crisis. "Our study confirms a number of dangerous trends: rising underemployment, loss of full-time jobs and the rapid decline in real wages," STUC economist Stephen Boyd said.  <http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/index.php/content/view/full/134246> Read more

International Solidarity

Taking Greek state television broadcaster ERT off the air is illegal, the Court of State has confirmed, after protests and petitions were sparked when Prime Minister Antonis Samaras sacked all 2,700 television workers last week.
