In the news this week
With so many column inches dedicated to the controversial Labour Party vote
in Falkirk, anyone would think it was Len McCluskey who was stripping
workers of their rights and standing idly by while his policies reduced
thousands to poverty; or that it was Ed Miliband who provided dinners for
donors and invited the rich to offer policy recommendations from which he
would barely err.
The amount of time wasted in Prime Minister Questions on Monday on bashing
Len McCluskey reveals just how much Tory disgust still remains for unions,
not only among the hardline backbenchers, but also from the Cabinet. It
should come as no surprise to subscribers that the Conservative Party have
such anti-worker values, with our Coalition timeline tracking a continuous
disregard for the voice of workers during the policymaking process. As if to
prove just how out-of-touch Tories are with ordinary people, one group of
MPs recently put forth a Private Members' Bill to rename the August bank
holiday
<http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2013-14/margaretthatcherday.html>
Margaret Thatcher day.
Elsewhere this week,
<http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/jul/05/minimum-wage-risks-going-rate
> there has been further evidence of the disastrous effect neoliberal
politics has had on the average Briton. Founder of the Low Pay Commission
George Bain has warned the wages are stagnating for many workers, and a
significant and increasing proportion are on a salary not much higher than
the National Minimum Wage (which itself has suffered lower-than-inflation
increases, or freezes, over the last few years).

03 July 2013

MPs might well say a rise in their pay is unacceptable, but they do so in
case their salaries cost them votes, not because of the evident injustice of
raising their salaries at a time of massive public sector spending cuts.

Dublin Lockout.jpgIn Conversation: The Dublin Lockout: learning the lessons
in the centenary year
Wednesday 30 October 2013
University of Liverpool, Bedford Street South, Liverpool
In the early 1900s many of Dublins residents lived in appalling slums. The
Irish TGWU struggled for better conditions which resulted in 300,000 workers
and 27 unions being locked out of their workplaces. What lessons can we
learn from this dispute and how does it inform our response to social
injustice in todays society.
