In the early 1900s many of Dublins residents lived in appalling slums. The
Irish TGWU struggled for better conditions which, in 1913, resulted in
300,000 workers and 27 unions being locked out of their workplaces.
Liverpool workers came out in support of the actions of their Irish comrades
and refused to handle traffic from Dublin.
Irish workers suffered a huge injustice at this time, but what lessons can
we learn from this dispute and how does it inform our response to social
injustice in todays society.
In this centenary year of the Dublin Lockout, Tony Donaghey, General
Secretary of the Connolly Association, and Lynn Collins, Regional Secretary
of the North West TUC, will consider the lessons we can learn from this
historic event.
