New research showing the UK is the worst in Europe
<http://www.ier.org.uk/news/uk-worst-europe-parental-pay> for parental pay
and leave underscores a terrible year for equality.
Dear IER subscriber
After a frightening year for equality campaigners, in which the Coalition
has cut or undermined equality laws on several fronts, we will next week be
discussing downward pressure on equality in the UK and what we can do to
improve the lives of our workers.
We're delighted to announce keynote speaker Sir Bob Hepple, Chair of the
Equal Rights Trust and renowned expert in the field, will be joining us on
the day and answering questions from delegates. He is joined by leading
specialists across legal, academic, campaigning and trade union
organisations in what promises to be an exciting and important event.
As if to underline the importance of stimulating this debate in the labour
movement, new research has this week shown the UK is the worst in Europe
when it comes to parental pay.
New parents receive significantly less than the minimum wage when they take
leave and the government's new Children and Families Bill - introducing
shared parental leave - is a weak cop-out that the government openly admits
will only help 2-8% of the nation (those on the best incomes, in case there
was any doubt). Read the full report here

Elsewhere, the Public Sector Equality Duty is under threat, access to
justice for those experiencing discrimination at work is about to become
even more difficult, and employees experiencing repeated harassment from
customers or contractors in the workplace no longer have any protection
under law.
The Coalition is setting us back in terms of social and economic progression
to an embarrassing degree, seeing us fall behind scores of countries around
the world when it comes to equal rights.
It's time we stood together to debate how we, the people, can tackle the
leadership on equality issues, and acknowledge how their actions bring us
into disrepute on the global stage.
Don't miss your chance to be part of the conversation.
We hope you can join us next week and look forward to seeing our delegates
there to speak about these urgent issues.
