Research suggests that gender equality may be stalling, as figures from the
<http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/ashe/annual-survey-of-hours-and-earnings/2013
-provisional-results/stb-ashe-statistical-bulletin-2013.html> Office for
National Statistics show an increase in the full-time gender pay gap.

Dear IER subscriber,

Despite the government's plans to extend workers the chance to request
flexible working to all employees
<http://www.bis.gov.uk/assets/biscore/employment-matters/docs/m/12-1269-mode
rn-workplaces-response-flexible-working.pdf> from 2014, it seems that we
still suffer from inequality at the workplace. IER will be addressing
equality at work issues during our one day conference in Liverpool.

We're delighted to announce speakers, Brian Doyle, Regional Employment Judge
and Sharon Hodgson MP, Shadow Women and Equalities Minister. Joining them
will be a vast range of specialists from legal, academic, campaigning and
trade union organisations who will attend our Equality and Discrimination
conference on January 22 at the Adelphi Hotel.

When the coalition came to office it declined to put into effect that part
of Labour’s Equality Act 2010 which forced companies with more than 250
staff to report the difference between men's and women's pay. The coalition
claimed a voluntary approach would be more effective than a regulation.

However when looking at the annual pay statistics published on Thursday
December 12, by the Office for National Statistics, it showed that the
full-time gender pay gap had increased from 14.8 per cent to 15.7 percent.

Commenting on the statistics, TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said
<http://www.tuc.org.uk/node/119316> :

“It is not right that in Britain today women still earn 15 per cent less per
hour than men, a pay gap that costs full-time women over £5,000 a year.

“The UK’s five million women part-time workers are faring even worse on pay,
with two in five now earning less than the living wage."

We encourage you to join us as we stand together to address issues of
equality and discrimination at work and find a solution as to how we, the
people, can resolve to secure a safer and fairer work environment for all.

Don't miss your chance to be part of the conversation.

We hope you can join us in Liverpool on January 22 and look forward to
hearing our delegates discuss these urgent issues.
