Research findings from December 2013 show how austerity cuts have greatly
affected the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the
services they use.

Dear IER e-subscriber,

As we embark into 2014 with suggestions of a further £25bn cuts to public
services, it is clear that austerity and inequality remain problems we will
face in the future.

The cuts will have a tremendously negative impact as they will decrease
employment, and create a feeling of insecurity amongst workers. This
insecurity will have a knock-on effect on terms and conditions of
employment, weakening the enforcement of existing employment rights.

However, we often forget that cuts and austerity affect more communities
than we imagine. The cuts will not only affect departments such as the home
office, legal aid, universities and local governments, but also people, like
the LGBT communities.

LGBT housing advice service has reported that there has been an all time
high in calls for support, with 25% of younger LGBT people already 'street
homeless'.

Carola Towle, UNISON national officer, LGBT equality, wrote in a
<http://www.ier.org.uk/blog/austerity-and-pink-pound-gaining-depth-understan
ding> blog for IER,

" Another recurrent theme was marginalisation, guilt and isolation. People
expressed concerns that their needs as LGBT people were treated as less
important than others - a luxury or ‘nice thing to do’ that could be dropped
in harder times. They felt guilty for asking that their needs be met in a
climate of austerity. Cuts were leading to less acceptance."

This is clear proof that inequality is still an issue amongst many
communities in the UK. In our Equality and Discrimination conference on
January 22 in Liverpool, we will be addressing issues of inequality and
discrimination amongst all communities and at work.

We will be joined by a vast range of speakers including Brian Doyle,
Regional Employment Judge, Sharon Hodgson MP, Shadow Women and Equalities
Minister and many more at the Adelphi Hotel.

We urge you to join us as we address issues of equality and discrimination
in and out of workplaces. We hope to find a solution as to how we, the
people, can take a step forward in addressing and resolving our concerns and
promote a safer and fairer work environment for people regardless of their
lifestyle or background.

Don't miss your chance to be part of the conversation.

We hope you can join us in Liverpool on the 22nd January and look forward to
discussing these urgent issues with delegates and experts.
