Happy New Year from the IER!

Happy New Year to all of our members from everyone at the Institute of
Employment Rights. We hope you had a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic
time seeing the new year in!

We'd like to take this opportunity to keep you up to date with our plans for
2016/17, in which we will continue to tackle the government's ideological
attack on workers' rights by harnessing the knowledge of our wide network of
academics and lawyers to inform the debate on trade union and employment
law.

Welcome back Sarah!

Sarah Glenister.jpgWelcome back to Sarah Glenister, who some of you may
remember as our Communications Officer in 2012 and 2013.

Sarah has been reinstated in her previous role, now with the title of
Development Officer, from January 2016 and will be responsible for keeping
you up to date with the latest developments in, and analysis of, trade union
and employment law.

Along with leading the return of our Friday News Brief, Sarah will be
commissioning in-depth articles from key experts and putting case studies in
the spotlight to illustrate how the erosion of workers' rights directly
effects people on the ground. Look out for a new monthly newsletter keeping
you abreast of the latest analysis.

Sarah will also be updating our Conservative Timeline
<http://www.ier.org.uk/resources/coalition-timeline> for a detailed view of
Tory ideology and the actions it drives, as well as working on some exciting
larger projects we have planned for this year. These include a new website,
new education courses, and new interactive and multimedia materials to
provide an easy-to-access and digestible resource for trade unionists.

I'm sure you will all be hearing from Sarah frequently over the next year.
Please do get in contact with anything you wish to promote or with any new
ideas you would like to discuss on sarah at ier.org.uk.

3: Promoting Economic Equality

‘Britain needs a pay rise’ is now a popular concept. And yet the government
continues to talk in terms of cuts in pay, pensions and jobs. Why?
Economists around the world now admit that austerity isn’t working for the
vast majority of the population. Our economy needs a boost – and not just in
the sale of luxury cars to the very rich. Britain needs workers who are well
paid and secure in their employment so that they are in a position to pay
tax, come off in-work benefits and buy the goods made by other workers. It’s
common sense. Three publications from IER set out why trade unions should be
at the very heart of such an economic transformation. All yours for just
£10!

4: Re-regulating Zero Hour Contracts

Zero Hour Contracts are highly profitable for employers, but lead to
insecurity of income and low pay for workers. The authors point to
rigidities in employment law and the operation of the tax-benefit system
which forces people to take any job offered as being responsible for the
rise in zero hours contracting. Buy your copy at the special reduced price
of £5

5: TUPE 2014

As the author of this timely report notes, ‘The period since 1981 has seen
the proliferation of privatisation and contracting out, with a dominant
theme being a desire to reduce wages and other workforce-related costs.’
Against this background, TUPE has traditionally provided essential
protections for workers. But how effective are those protections now? This
publication guides the reader through statutory and judicial changes in some
detail, with reference to leading cases both in the UK and in Europe. It
considers the implications and likely impact of changes in law and the
ability of employers to change terms derived from collective agreements. Get
your copy for just £5!

6: Access to Justice

Access to justice has been seriously undermined in recent years and two IER
publications led the way in exposing the damaging nature of those sweeping
reforms. Justice Deferred offers a comprehensive guide to the undermining of
employment tribunals, while Access to Justice offers expert critique -
including John Hendy QC and several other leading experts and academics.
Both publications for just £10
