Human Rights vs Bill of Rights :

What's in it for workers?

London 27 April 2016

ondon> The issue of Human Rights was back in the news last week, with
foreign secretary Philip Hammond being accused of "soft pedalling" over
deprioritising Human Rights. He came under criticism from the foreign
affairs select committee, claiming that the work of the Foreign Office had
undermined the department's excellent work on human rights. Legal charity
Reprieve spokeswoman Maya Foa also spoke out about the "steady downgrading
of the government's commitment to human rights".

<http://www.ier.org.uk/node/2944> In May's election manifesto, the
Conservatives were very clear about wanting to scrap the Human Rights Act
and replace it with a Bill of Rights. They even suggesting withdrawing the
UK from the Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Tory's have already said the
Bill of Rights will not contain any new rights so how should the labour
movement respond? Should we argue against this change? Or will we be
pushing for amendments to any proposed UK Bill to make sure rights are not
watered down? Or both?

The IER has brought together an excellent selection of expert speakers to
discuss this issue. We have two up and coming events in London and Liverpool
on 'Human Rights vs. Bill of rights: What's in it for workers?' where our
expert speakers will be discussing and comparing rights at work under the
European Convention on Human Rights, the Human Rights Act and likely
contents of any UK Bill of Rights.
