news brief
Friday 20th May 2016
Many thanks to all who attended our Human Rights Vs. Bill of Rights: What's in it for workers? (http://ier.us12.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=e76176c91b&e=d6817ec71e) event yesterday. Look out on our our website for the papers and report from the event, which we will upload in the next week and include in next Friday's News Brief.
Our next event focuses on the public sector and privatisation and will be held in London (http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=40553c164e&e=d6817ec71e) in June and Liverpool in July (http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=d1a6f6fb8b&e=d6817ec71e) .
Speaking at our London conference will be Mark Serwotka, General Secretary of the PCS Union, which this week won its case against the Department for Work and Pensions for banning check-off arrangements (http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=6699e25f59&e=d6817ec71e) . As a result of the removal of check-off, PCS suffered significant financial losses and was forced to dedicate substantial resources to re-subscribing its members via direct debit. All of this conveniently made it more difficult for the union to stand up to swingeing public sector cuts.
Joining Mark are Matt Wrack, General Secretary of FBU; Neil Todd of Thompsons Solicitors; Kate Ewing & Matthew Egan of UNISON’s home care workers project; Dr Lydia Hayes of Cardiff University and economist Andrew Fisher.
Early bird tickets are now available on our website (http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=0ad397532a&e=d6817ec71e) .

Ballot Thresholds The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

Keithe Ewing The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
