This has been an exciting and eventful week for the Institute of Employment Rights, as Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell used his keynote speech at the Labour Party Conference to announce the Labour Party's adoption of the IER Manifesto for Labour Law <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=d5370382bf&e=71131c031b> .
Assistant General Secretary of UNITE Tony Burke also called on delegates to back the Manifesto in his speech in support of the hugely popular Composite 4, moved by UNITE, for a new industrial strategy.
Our 25 policy recommendations <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=54082a29d3&e=71131c031b> aim to refocus employment law on collectively agreed pay and conditions that encourage fair increases in income and job security, rather than statutory minimums that unscrupulous employers either seek to evade or use to keep wages on the floor. As Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley said last week <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=a041bdab1d&e=71131c031b> : "I don’t set the minimum wage", before going on to blame the government for his company's meagre salaries and famously exploitative contracts. This is exactly the attitude to workers' rights our proposals seek to bring to an end.
Many thanks to every one of our supporters <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=86e82e1388&e=71131c031b> and sponsors <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=c658655780&e=71131c031b> who have helped us take the Manifesto to Westminster. Thousands have bought our books and given donations, helping us to raise awareness of our policies at a time when pulling together is the best way to strengthen our collective voice come the next general election.
But there is still a lot of work to do to get the word out there about our progressive alternative to neoliberalism and we still need your help. If you have not yet made a donation to our project development fund <http://ier.us12.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=9938202c1f&e=71131c031b> or bought your copy of the Manifesto <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=a7bda76c14&e=71131c031b> , please consider doing so today.

Access to Justice: Exposing the myths: £6

In the second of IER’s series of Mythbusters, Andrew Moretta considers the many myths surrounding access to justice, including the narrative surrounding the “red tape” and “burdens on business” ideology, which he believes paved the way for systematic attacks on the tribunal system.

The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
