This week, we have shared a video of our Chair John Hendy QC <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=487e433d4c&e=71131c031b> - lead co-author of our Manifesto for Labour Law <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=970a101326&e=71131c031b> - explaining how our proposals for reform will help to protect the increasing number of people currently trapped in precarious work.

Analysis for the Guardian <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=72d4a2946f&e=71131c031b> has shown that over one in five workers are now in jobs that they could lose at short or no notice, with the number of people in such insecure work rising from 5.3 million to 7.1 million over the last ten years.

The figures also revealed that low pay is endemic among precarious workers - including those (mis)classified as self-employed, who now earn around half the wage of an average worker - uncovering a much darker side to the employment rate rise the Tories have boasted about. Earlier this year, the TUC reported that 88% of new jobs are classified as <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=061b7e8743&e=71131c031b> "self-employed".

What's more, a new government report <http://ier.us12.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=f6cc73ab3b&e=71131c031b> suggests that only 10% of those on low pay ever escape on to higher earnings, calling for urgent action to be taken to shift the economy away from its focus on low-skilled, low-waged jobs. Not only will the poorest and most vulnerable continue to suffer, the Social Mobility Commission warned, but a lack of training among the workforce is heading the UK towards a skills crisis.

These stories onces again echo the concerns we outlined in our Manifesto for Labour Law - 25 recommendations for the reform of labour law now adopted by the Labour Party <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=3fcd3ac351&e=71131c031b> . At a Unite the Resistance Conference last weekend, John Hendy QC said: "The only way we can recover this situation for the working class in this country is to bring back collective bargaining .... the only way that workers can have a voice in their wokring lives is through a trade union collectively bargaining with their employer or employers' association."

The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
