The House of Lords yesterday voted to protect migrant workers from the EU, putting pressure on the Tories to give the estimated three million EU workers in the UK assurances that they will be allowed to remain after Brexit.
The peers voted 358 to 256 to amend the Brexit Bill in such a way that the government would be required to introduce proposals within three months after Article 50 is triggered to guarantee residence rights for EU citizens.
However, the Bill will now go back to the Commons where the Tories may reject the amendment.
Whether there is a "hard" or "soft" Brexit, it is clear migrant rights will be a salient issue in the UK for years to come. But how should labour standards be reformed to ensure that migrant workers - among the most vulnerable sections of society - are protected; and how do we ensure that employers do not take advantage of the most vulnerable in order to undercut wages and conditions for all?
This question will be taken on by eight academics, campaigners and trade unionists at the forefront of migrant workers' rights at one-day conference held by the Institute of Employment Rights on March 15 2017 <http://www.ier.org.uk/events/migration-after-brexit-challenge-labour-standards-2017-0> .
All attendees will receive a free copy of the Institute of Employment Rights' book Labour Migration in Hard Times <http://www.ier.org.uk/publications/labour-migration-hard-times-reforming-labour-market-regulation> – a collection of essays from some of the UK's leading experts on migration and its impact on labour standards in the context of increased hostility towards migrant labour from some sections of the public.
The Institute of Employment Rights will tackle this issue at our Migration after Brexit event on March 15, where leading academics, campaigners and trade unionists will come together to discuss the labour movement's resistance to today's elitist vision for globalisation.
