  <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3/images/42bef9e9-0080-4d3d-9334-2e260fdb3b8d.gif>

A Welsh Committee has backed proposals to repeal sections of the Trade Union Act 2016 <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=7b633b1d6f&e=71131c031b> as it pertains to the public sector in Wales.

This is the latest in the devolved parliament's resistance to Westminster's anti-trade union legislation. The UK government was warned by First Minister Carwyn Jones that Wales would not accept the Trade Union Act's implementation within its borders and would fight any changes imposed upon the devolved state.

Earlier this year, the Welsh Assembly published the Trade Union Bill, which moves to repeal sections of the Trade Union Act that force the Welsh state to restrict access to Check-off facilities for those in the public sector; require public sector organisations to report facility time; and add an extra 40% support threshold to strike ballots in "important" public services.

Elsewhere, the UK government has moved to impose further measures as part of the Trade Union Act, consulting over the next six weeks on proposals to provide the Certification Officer with the power to fine unions up to £20,000 for breaching rules. We provide detail of the consultation here <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=919df38cc2&e=71131c031b> .

Also, watch this space for an IER event on the Trade Union Act, which will be coming to London and Liverpool next month.

In the meantime, don't forget to book your place on to our Migration after Brexit conference in Liverpool <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=d04a6b1cf9&e=71131c031b> later this month. The April 27th event will bring together lawyers, academics and trade unionists to discuss how Brexit will affect workers' rights for migrants as well as people born in the UK. Owing to the historic importance of this debate, we have introduced significant discounts <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=d092987580&e=71131c031b> to our usual entry fees, with general admission set at £50 and concessions at £25.

The IER has been bringing together academics, lawyers, campaigners and trade unionists to discuss the latest developments in labour law and how they can be resisted or improved upon for decades. Our events are some of the most prestigious and trusted in the labour movement.

However, as a charity we cannot run them alone. Each year, we ask organisations to consider sponsoring an IER event to help us continue our work. Survey shows most UK workers do not want to be a part of the 'gig economy'
Three-quarters of UK workers would prefer a traditional job over taking part in the so-called 'gig economy', in which "self employed" contractors (many of whom have been found to be misclassified as which) take on jobs for companies like Uber, Deliveroo and courier companies.

	The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

	The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
