Our experts have this week begun a new series of articles called Fact News, in which we will be providing the background information on workers' rights proposals made in the run-up to the General Election.

This week, an easy to read guide to collective sectoral bargaining <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=334343249e&e=71131c031b> following Labour's announcement of the restoration of collective sectoral bargaining as a key policy.

Our Chair John Hendy QC and President Professor Keith Ewing explain how sectoral collective bargaining works and how it can be used to strengthen workers' rights.

Next week, they will move on to a more detailed look at the purposes and benefits of sectoral collective bargaining.

In our other blog this week, we republish an abridged version <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=9ec929cca4&e=71131c031b> of Professor Gregor Gall's latest piece for the Jimmy Reid Foundation on the implementation of the Institute of Employment Rights' Manifesto for Labour Law <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=729ad8d185&e=71131c031b> in Scotland.

If you missed it earlier this week, our whistleblowing expert Catherine Hobby has also responded to a call for evidence from the Law Commission on proposals to change the Official Secrets Act. Catherine explains how reform must protect the rights of workers who need to blow the whistle <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=59303b1957&e=71131c031b> .

And lastly, don't miss out on our forthcoming conference on the Trade Union Act 2016 <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=6bf230c769&e=71131c031b> , which will be held in Liverpool later this month. We're offering discounts of up to 66% off - book now to avoid disappointment!

Sponsor an IER event

The IER has been bringing together academics, lawyers, campaigners and trade unionists to discuss the latest developments in labour law and how they can be resisted or improved upon for decades. Our events are some of the most prestigious and trusted in the labour movement.

However, as a charity we cannot run them alone. Each year, we ask organisations to consider sponsoring an IER event to help us continue our work. The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
