Employers must now consult unions over a wider range of issues affecting workers <http://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=1a62c2dc9c&e=71131c031b> after Unison won a landmark victory in the Court of Appeal.
The union took Wandsworth Borough Council to task after it made parks police officers redundant without consulting the union, and the judge ruled in their favour on appeal.
Prior to this decision, employers only had to consult unions where it was explicitly required in law, such as when employees were transferred from one employer to another or in the case of collective redundancy.
However, employers will now have to consult unions over issues relating to working time and holiday pay, Unison has said.
The Institute of Employment Rights welcomes this ruling and congratulates Unison on another landmark success. The more rights unions have to negotiate with employers, the stronger workers' protections become at a time when exploitation is a growing concern for those working in an increasingly casualised labour market. This is why we must reform labour law in such a way that the focus is shifted towards labour standards agreed via sectoral collective bargaining, rather than relying on statutory minimums that provide employers with a floor to aim for, as recommended in our Manifesto for Labour Law <http://ier.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=8efda99ab7&e=71131c031b> .

The Conservative Government’s proposed strike ballot thresholds: The challenge to trade unions: from £6
By Professor Ralph Darlington and Dr John Dobson
According to the authors of this timely report, the government is attempting to rush into law ‘the most sweeping and radical tightening of rules on industrial action since the Thatcher era of the 1980’s’. They warn that such proposals could result in ‘the biggest showdown over industrial relations for a generation’ and go on to drill down into one aspect of the government’s proposals – strike ballots.

The mythology of business: from £6
By David Whyte
The ‘myths’ that this publication takes into consideration are the kind of things that politicians now routinely say without thinking. Yet these 10 myths have very little foundation in reality and are rarely, if ever, accompanied with any concrete evidence to support them.
