This week, the IER has been at the Unite Policy Conference in Brighton, at which both Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey confirmed their support <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=5cd03fe477&e=71131c031b> for the recommendations in our Manifesto for Labour Law <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=ee3b1dcaa6&e=71131c031b> . As the UK remembers the 167 workers killed at the explosion of the Piper Alpha oil rig 30 years ago, our experts also look at how health and safety legislation urgently needs to be updated to ensure such tragedies never happen again. David Whyte notes the concerning parallels between the fires at Piper Alpha and Grenfell Tower <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=99002b236f&e=71131c031b> ; while Phil James explains why the law should be reformed according to the principles of the IER's Manifesto for Labour Law <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=898fbc1578&e=71131c031b> .

Support the IER in its 30th Anniversary year
This year we are celebrating our forthcoming 30th Anniversary and we're appealing for your support. We hope to raise £30,000 to celebrate our 30 years and with these funds we will modernise our website and communications; promote our ideas through meetings, education packs, videos and animations; and establish a reserve to avoid repeat fundraising.

COMMENT: Two neoliberal infernos: Grenfell, and Piper Alpha 30 years on
Professor David Whyte notes the disturbing parallels that can be drawn between the fires at Piper Alpha and Grenfell Tower: profit-before-safety, warnings ignored, 239 people dead. Britain’s oil bonanza and London’s gentrification, he says, have much in common.

COMMENT: Shake it up: IER agenda for health and safety reform
Phil James says something has gone dangerously wrong at work and there needs to be a fundamental shake up of the system to provide better rights covering all workers, justice for those harmed by their jobs and more stringent, enforceable duties on employers.

Labour Law Highlights 2017: £8
Edited by Rebecca Tuck
Catch up with the most important case law developments in 2017 in the latest of our popular Labour Law Highlights series.
In this year’s Labour Law Highlights, a team of barristers from Old Square Chambers returns to assess how each of these events has impacted upon case law in the last 12 months, including clarification from the courts on the requirements of the Trade Union Act in practice, the flurry of tribunal hearings regarding ‘gig’ workers, and further decisions on the rights of workers required to take "sleep-in" shifts. In each case, they provide commentary on the potential wider implications of tribunal decisions.
