The government has come under fire from two separate cross-party parliamentary committees this week for its failure to ensure the enforcement of the law.

The Women and Equalities Committee published a scathing report on age discrimination in the workplace <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=404802c773&e=71131c031b> , saying more than a million people over the age of 50 are struggling to stay in employment due to the failure of the government and Equality and Human Rights Committee to enforce the Equality Act 2010.

The MPs described this lack of enforcement as "alarming and unacceptable" and recommended urgent action.

Elsewhere, the Joint Committee on Human Rights hit out at legal aid cuts and reforms to the judicial service <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=d5d8fdb3c7&e=71131c031b> , which it said has made human rights "unenforceable" in some parts of the country.

Large swathes of the UK are now "legal aid deserts", it warned, reminding the government that "for rights to be effective they have to be capable of being enforced".

In our Manifesto for Labour Law <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=cb4f221122&e=71131c031b> - 25 recommendations for reform - the Institute of Employment Rights proposes that enforcement of the law is strengthened through the establishment of an independent labour inspectorate with the power to enter workplaces, issue cease and desists notices, and bring proceedings on behalf of workers. Further, our experts advocate for free legal advice on employment claims and access to ACAS services to be made available to all.

	Labour Law Highlights 2017: £8
Edited by Rebecca Tuck
Catch up with the most important case law developments in 2017 in the latest of our popular Labour Law Highlights series.

In this year’s Labour Law Highlights, a team of barristers from Old Square Chambers returns to assess how each of these events has impacted upon case law in the last 12 months, including clarification from the courts on the requirements of the Trade Union Act in practice, the flurry of tribunal hearings regarding ‘gig’ workers, and further decisions on the rights of workers required to take "sleep-in" shifts. In each case, they provide commentary on the potential wider implications of tribunal decisions.
