Celebrating ILO standards: How does Britain compare?

Next year is the 100th anniversary of the International Labour Organisation (IL0). The ILO was founded in 1919 as part of the peace settlement after the first world war as the arm of the United Nations charged with setting universal labour standards across the world.

Labour is not a commodity; freedom of expression and of association are essential to sustained progress; poverty anywhere constitutes a danger to prosperity everywhere; the war against want requires to be carried out with unrelenting vigour (in which worker and employer representatives join government in discussion and democratic decision) – these are the principles of the ILO's 1944 Declaration of Philadelphia, passed to reaffirm members states' dedication to the principles with which it was founded.

Unfortunately, in the UK those ILO principles have been undermined and reversed since 1979. Attacks on trade unions, on freedom of association and on collective bargaining have led to a dramatic decline in the living standards and security of UK workers, which in turn has had a negative impact on the health, wealth and welfare of a new generation of UK workers.

So what is to be done? As we enter a post-Brexit world we need to ensure that the core fundamental principles adopted by 187 member states 100 years ago, once again form the bedrock of a new, fair and progressive labour law agenda for the future.

Confirmed speakers:

John Hendy QC, IER - ILO standards, an overview

Amanda Brown, NEU - A century of the ILO – what's the future of labour standards for the next century?

Dan Blackburn, ICTUR - Complaints & enforcement mechanisms in the ILO

Tonia Novitz, University of Bristol - ILO plans for the future of work

Steve Gibbons, Director of Ergon Associates - Where are we with principles on business and human rights, Modern Slavery Act and beyond: Towards a binding treaty

Carolyn Jones, Director of IER - ILO standards and the Manifesto for Labour Law
