IER Chair John Hendy QC and IER President Professor Keith Ewing have published a detailed critique <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=d48321a4d0&e=71131c031b> of the workers' rights proposals lauched yesterday by a government desperate to win support for its Brexit deal.
The experts explain that the 'non-regression clause' Theresa May promises to enact in order to protect those EU-derived rights already in UK law are unclear and do not guarantee that workers' rights will not be diluted in a post-Brexit UK.
Further, they question the Prime Minister's promise that future workers' rights brought in by the EU after the UK has left will be taken to a vote in Parliament so that MPs can decide whether or not to maintain international standards for employment law. Keith and John point out this vow also offers no guarantee that the UK will not fall behind our peers in labour law terms, especially under a government with a history of eroding workers' rights.
Lastly, they explain how May's promises are not legally binding commitments, as has beem implied by the government. Although they will now - finally - be written into a Bill to be put before Parliament, there is nothing to stop any successor from repealing that Bill and the future of the UK's employment law will still be left at the mercy of whoever holds power.

Now we present Rolling Out, a guide to how our recommendations could be practically implemented.
