Progress on social mobility has stagnated over the last five years and teeters on the brink of reversing, the Social Mobility Commission (SMC) has warned <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=10d778e927&e=71131c031b> .
Although many interventions have focused on providing better education to those from deprived areas, the latest State of the Nation report from the Commitee uncovered the worrying fact that even when working class people are equally qualified as people from more privileged backgrounds they are still less likely to find professional work.
Furthermore, those that overcome these hurdles to gain top jobs are typically paid less than their more affluent peers.
The SMC called on the government to pay its own workers - subcontracted or otherwise - the Real Living Wage to set an example to employers elsewhere in the country.
The Institute of Employment Rights goes further. In our Manifesto for Labour Law, we propose that the Real Living Wage is rolled out as a new statutory minimum, socio-economic background is included as a protected characteristic in the Equality Act 2010 to tackle class-based discrimination, public sector organisations are given a duty to close the gap between the haves and have-nots, and sectoral collective bargaining is reinstated to allow trade unions and employers' associations to negotiate decent pay and conditions across entire industries.
Help design our new website!
Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, the Institute of Employment Rights now has the funds to redevelop our website. This is vital to raising awareness of our recommendations, providing effective educational tools, and keeping the labour movement informed of the latest developments in labour law as well as expert critique. Our site has served us well for over ten years now, but due to the vast amount of resources we have amassed it has become difficult to manage - now is the time to make it easier to use and nicer to look at!
To make sure we develop a website that effectively meets our users' needs, we're asking for two minutes of your time to complete this very short survey <https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=b582399c20&e=71131c031b> .

Support the IER in its 30th Anniversary year
This year we are celebrating our forthcoming 30th Anniversary and we're appealing for your support. We hope to raise £30,000 to celebrate our 30 years and with these funds we will modernise our website and communications; promote our ideas through meetings, education packs, videos and animations; and establish a reserve to avoid repeat fundraising.
