news brief
Friday 12th July 2019
Two news stories this week have illustrated how the Institute of Employment Rights' Manifesto for Labour Law recommendations have a wide range of applications, from tackling economic productivity to fighting climate change.
In Wales, the Manifesto informed, in part, the latest report of the Fair Work Commission, which is now the basis for the government's Social Partnership Bill.
Earlier this week, First Minister Mark Drakeford told the Senedd the new Bill will promote collective bargaining, require bidders on public contracts to meet fair labour standards, establish a government department to improve and uphold workers' rights, strengthen the enforcement of employment law and collective agreements, and introduce a duty on public sector organisations to address socioeconomic inequalities.
He emphasised that the new legislation would not only ensure Welsh workers can find fair wages and conditions, but that good employers would not longer be undercut by unscrupulous ones, and as a result of a more committed workforce, economic productivity would improve.
The IER will hold a free event with the architects of the Manifesto for Labour Law, as well as members of the Welsh Assembly and Wales TUC, who helped to develop the Social Partnerships Bill. Click here to register your attendance.
Elsewhere, an announcement from the TUC revealed how the Manifesto for Labour Law can be put to use in countering climate change. The TUC's proposals for mechanisms that could make our economy greener as well as fairer closely mirror those put forth in the Manifesto. These include a forum of representatives from across society to plan towards a low-carbon future; effective collective bargaining processes to ensure workers' voices are heard in every workplace during the transition to a greener UK; government support for the upskilling of the workforce to fill new skills gaps; and mechanisms to ensure wages and conditions are not undercut.
