IER experts set out Emergency Bill to ensure Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme works for all
Ahead of this evening's Press Briefing with the Prime Minister, the IER has published two further articles regarding the government's response to Coronavirus.
We welcome the Job Retention Scheme announced on Friday after unions won the argument over protecting workers' pay. The Scheme will help to keep many workers in their jobs. However, our experts have warned the UK's legal framework could mitigate the benefits of the plan.
Professor Michael Ford QC and Professor Alan Bogg have set out proposals for an Emergency Bill to ensure the Scheme works for all.
Meanwhile, Professor Alan Felstead has warned the millions of precarious workers affected by a corona-recession may include hundreds of thousands of people traditionally considered to be in stable jobs, as new research shows that - long before the virus hit - as many people on "guaranteed-hour" contracts were seeing their shifts cancelled at short notice as people on 'zero-hour' contracts.
IER and Covid-19
Due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease and the need to keep our staff, supporters and speakers safe, IER have decided to postpone all forthcoming IER events and meetings until further notice, including both Health and safety at work after Brexit conferences in Liverpool and London, the IER Executive Committee, IER AGM and our joint event with the Campaign for Trade Union Freedom on 6th June.
IER staff will continue to work, but remotely from home. We will answer emails, produce publications and circulate our weekly News Briefs and other on-line information. However, phone calls to the office or mail sent by post will not receive immediate attention.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and wish you all best wishes during this difficult time.
