Happy New Year from the IER!
As 2021 begins, we find ourselves in an employment landscape vastly different from that which we inhabited 12 months ago. While the Coronavirus remains a threat - both to jobs and to lives - workers now must face the new uncertainties posed by Boris Johnson's 11th hour Brexit deal.
In two new IER blogs, employment law experts Professor Nicola Countouris, Professor Keith Ewing and Lord John Hendy QC analyse the detail of the deal and what it means for the future of workers' rights.
They set out the contents of the agreement in <https://www.ier.org.uk/comments/how-the-brexit-deal-threatens-your-rights-at-work/> Part 1 and warn of strong signs the government intends to use its new 'freedom' over employment law to dilute workers' rights.
In <https://www.ier.org.uk/comments/collective-bargaining-promises-in-brexit-deal-are-nothing-but-hot-air/> Part 2, they critique Article 8 of Title XI of the deal, which ostensibly promises that both the EU and UK will continue to comply with their International Labour Organisation obligations to protect workers' rights, including the right to bargain collectively. As the experts point out, both the UK and EU were failing to meet their obligations at the time of signing the deal, so there is little hope that Article 8 will provide any material protection.

IER and Covid-19
Due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease and the need to keep our staff, supporters and speakers safe, IER have decided to postpone all forthcoming IER events and meetings until further notice, including both Health and safety at work after Brexit conferences in Liverpool and London, the IER Executive Committee, IER AGM and our joint event with the Campaign for Trade Union Freedom on 6th June.
IER staff will continue to work, but remotely from home. We will answer emails, produce publications and circulate our weekly News Briefs and other on-line information. However, phone calls to the office or mail sent by post will not receive immediate attention.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and wish you all best wishes during this difficult time.
