FREE: New briefings on freeports and a universal status of 'worker'
This week, we present two new briefings on current hot topics.
IER researcher, Ben Crawford, conducts an international analysis of freeports and their impact on workers' rights around the globe, making recommendations to protect freeport workers from exploitation.
Meanwhile, with Lord John Hendy QC's Status of Worker Bill nearing its second reading in the House of Lords, a new briefing examines the issue of insecure work and how the UK's employment status system has encouraged its growth.
Also see below, the announcement of our TUC Fringe - as always, free to attend, and featuring a high-profile panel of speakers.
And finally - we are hiring! We're looking for a new Director of the IER and interested candidates are invited to read the job description and apply here.

BRIEFING: Freeports and labour standards
Ben Crawford, IER PhD researcher, responds to the government’s drive towards the creation of freeports with an analysis of their impact on workers’ wages and conditions internationally.
He notes that where freeports have been poorly designed, they do not just become a way for firms to avoid customs duties, but also a way for them to exploit workers.

BRIEFING: The Status of Workers Bill
The Status of Workers Bill was introduced to the House of Lords on 24 May 2021 by Lord John Hendy QC, Chair of the IER.
It aims to abolish insecure work by replacing the UK’s overcomplicated employment status system with a universal status of ‘worker’.
This would mean that all people in employment, who are not genuinely self-employed, would have the same workers’ rights, including to claim unfair dismissal.
This briefing outlines the growing problems associated with insecure work and how the Status of Workers Bill is part of an effective solution.
