The move has been overwhelmingly popular with low-paid workers in education, cleaning, catering and care roles, with ballots resulting in 90%+ votes in favour of a strike.<br><br>General Secretary of the European Public Service Union Grouping, Jan Willem Goudriaan, <a href="https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=132a730eda&e=71131c031b">encouraged union members across the continent to send messages of solidarity</a> to the workers, stating that a victory in their equal pay case could be an "inspiration" for millions of women across Europe.<br><br>And it seems the unions and strikers are not the only ones urging employers to act over poor pay for female-dominated public sector work. The Public Accounts Committee this week <a href="https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=0418dfe52f&e=71131c031b">called on the government</a> to raise pay and conditions for those - usually women - working in the social care sector.<br><br>In <a href="https://ier.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f121e48a8bb6d3101590c12d3&id=8a095b1aa1&e=71131c031b">Rolling out the Manifesto for Labour Law</a> - the Institute of Employment Rights' latest report, ideas from which have been adopted by the Labour Party - we recommend raising wages and conditions for low-paid workers through sectoral collective bargaining. This mechanism - which is widely used across most other developed economies - allows employers' associations and unions to negotiate for minimum pay rates and conditions of work for each industry.
