Anti war activists Maya Anne Evans and Milan Rai are walking 50 miles in
50 hours, this Monday, from the nuclear weapons base in Aldermaston,
Berkshire to
demand an end to Trident replacement, no war on Iran and to mark the
50th anniversary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament(1).
Maya Anne Evans (2), 28 years old, author of Naming the Dead, and the
first
person to be convicted under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act
2005 and Milan Rai, 42 years old, author of 7/7: The London bombings,
Islam and the Iraq War and co-editor of Peace News are setting off from
Aldermaston Monday morning to retrace parts of the historical
Aldermaston to London route which ends in Trafalgar Square.
By the time the expected 5,000 campaigners from across the country and
Japanese survivors of the 1945 US nuclear attacks on Japan surround the
base at mid day on Monday, the 'Justice Not Vengeance'(3) campaigners
Evans
and Rai should be on the way towards their overnight stop off point in
Slough.
Maya Anne Evans says: As well as being potentially devastating to the
environment, nuclear weapons have long term and sever medical effects on
the people theyre let loose on and for generations to come, its time
to end nuclear armament.
Milan Rai says: Im doing this because Im in a hurry for peace.
The two will follow a route along the A404 with a support car; they plan
to stop overnight in Slough and continue the following day into Central
London.
