Protestors target RAF Waddington as part of International Drone Dissent
THIS SATURDAY 12 noon activists from around the UK will gather at RAF
Waddington to protest against the opening of the intended first drone
base on British soil; it will climax a week long 90 mile peace walk
across the Midlands, as part of an international week of action against
drones.
In the last week anti drones protests have included Imran Khan's peace
march against US drone strikes in Waziristan and UK Churches voicing
serious concerns about the humanitarian and legal implications of
drones, urging William Hague to distance the UK Government from the
practice.
Last month, Lord Macdonald of River Glaven told the Daily Telegraph that
there was “pretty compelling” evidence that British intelligence was
providing information to assist the US with drone-strike assassinations
in Pakistan and Afghanistan, noting that drone-strikes were killing
innocent people and creating a “new generation of people with huge
resentment against the West” [1].
Maya Evans [2], who is currently walking to RAF Waddington, said:
"During a visit to Afghanistan last December, I met a 19-year-old whose
brother-in-law - a trainee police officer with a wife and 1 year-old son
- was killed in a drone strike. Needless to say, there was no
investigation of the killing."
Penny Walker, organizer said: "These pilot-less killing machines – which
have already killed hundreds of innocent civilians in Pakistan, Somalia,
Yeman, Afghanistan and Gaza - are fuelling anger and terrorism around
the world, endangering us all. They are also paving the way for a future
in which robots make "decisions" to kill with no human oversight. We
need to take action now to end this new form of remote-control murder."
