"Towards Knowledge Societies" is the motto of UNESCO's events at the World
Summit on the Information Society, in Geneva next week.  They include a High
Level Symposium and thematic round table discussions in the area of
education, sciences, culture and communication.

The High Level Symposium on Building Knowledge Societies - from Vision to
Action (9 December, 15:00-18:00 and 10 December 10:00-12:00, Conference
Centre, Room C), UNESCO's main Summit event, will bring together Heads of
State, Nobel Prize Winners, CEOs and other world leaders to debate the main
challenges for the construction of knowledge societies (in cooperation with
the Swiss Federal Office for Communications (OFCOM)). "The UNESCO symposium
is a call for world leaders to ensure that cultural, ethical and
intellectual dimensions are key parts in the summit process" says Adama
Samassékou, President of the WSIS Preparatory Committee. More Information on

In addition, UNESCO is organizing the following round table discussions:

* Monitoring the Information Society: Data, Measurement and Methods
(8 and 9 December, in cooperation with UNECE, UNCTAD, ITU, OECD and
Eurostat; at UNECE)

* DigiArts
(10 December, 10:00-12:00, (ICT4D Platform, Hall 4, Room 16)

* Cultural Diversity in Knowledge Societies
(10 December, 13:30 - 16:30, Conference Centre, Hall 3, Room C)

* Public Service Broadcasting
(11 December, 9:00-12:30, Conference Centre, Room B; at WEMF)

* Education and Knowledge Societies
(11 December, 9:30 - 13:00, Conference Centre, Hall 3, Room C)

* Sciences in Knowledge Societies
(11 December, 14:00-16:30, Conference Centre, Hall 3, Room C)

* Media Development in Knowledge Societies
(12 December, 10:00-13:00, Conference Centre, Hall 3, Room C)

* Languages, Literacy and New Technologies
(12 December, 14:00-18:00, ICT4D Platform, Hall 4, Room 2)

UNESCO will also host a high level event launching national Community
Multimedia Centre initiatives (10 December 2003, 18:15 -19:15, ICT4D
Platform, Hall 4, Room 2+3).
