The Kurdish people, under the leadership of the PKK, are struggling for their freedom. In view of the entire world, a dirty war is being waged against the Kurdish people. In this war, the Turkish government has not refrained from using the most inhumane and illegal measures. Throughout its history, the Turkish state has brought its own people and its neighbors nothing else but murder, torture, oppression, and pain. Every mention of the question of the Kurdish people for the most basic rights and freedoms has been continually smeared in blood. Thousands of civilians are locked up in prisons, and they are denied all human dignity. Cities are burned, villages are bombed flat, and no account is taken of the lives of women and children. Every day, innocent people are killed by the contra-guerrilla or the Hizbi-contra (a para-military group supported by the government). At the moment that the Kurdish people are closer than ever to achieving their freedom, the Turkish state strikes ever harder to destroy them. The military dictatorship, which is responsible for all of the inhumane measures directed against the Kurdish people, makes use of world-wide silence to march over the bodies of the Kurdish people. The Kurdish people want to be free to decide their own future. Confronted with a cruel and vicious war, the people realize there is only one alternative: survival or total destruction. Today, all of Kurdistan and Turkey is involved in this war. 1993 will see an intensification of this war like never before. This is unavoidable due to a number of reasons. The Kurdish people are at a point where only war remains as a means of liberation from the bloody dictatorship which has, as its aim, the destruction of our people. Various European nations and concerns formulated proposals for a cease-fire to reach a solution for the Kurdish question. The PKK has always welcomed these proposals with open arms. But still, the Turkish state has rejected all of these peace proposals and still maintains that military oppression is the only solution. For these reasons, the PKK feel it is necessary to use all available means in the legitimate defense of the Kurdish people, who are threatened with destruction by the Turkish state. The PKK has no other choice. All means of disrupting the Turkish economy are being inspected, particularly those activites which the Turkish state most depends on. We know that tourism helps greatly finance the war against the Kurdish people. The following areas are particularly threatened: the area around the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Sea of Marmara, and Kurdistan itself. The tourist zones, hotels, beaches, and other tourist accomodations are in danger. And we cannot avoid the fact that this means that the lives of many innocent tourists from all over the world and especially European tourists who visit Turkey in large numbers are in danger. We believe that the Turkish government and various tourist agencies are going to launch an active propaganda campaign to cover-up the war situation. Their primary concern is their own economic interests, not the worth of human lives. For our part, we want to inform the free and peace-loving citizens of Europe and the rest of the world who are considering to travel to Turkey to take seriously the dangers they face on account of the brutal war being waged by Turkey. On account of these warnings, we cannot be held responsible for damage inflicted by bombings, fire-bombings, and other attacks carried out against tourist targets. The PKK also denies any responsibility for any lives lost as a result of these actions. The Turkish government has the possibility of ending this dirty war. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arm The Spirit Arm The Spirit c/o Autonome Forum c/o Wild Seed Press PO Box 1242 PO Box 57584, Jackson Stn. The PKK has warned tourists not to travel to Turkey, lest they be harmed during these attacks. Despite Turkish/Western/NATO propaganda, a brutal war is being waged against the Kurds in Turkey. Tourists should not travel in a war-zone. The following post is a statement from the PKK regarding this situation. The neverending conflicts between the industrialist official projects and green political movements in Turkey has recently come to a point of warfare. As soon as the ministry of energy decided to build up a nuclear power plant in Akkuyu township, which has a splendid landscape on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, the public outcry led by green NGOs has started to increase since the beginning of this year. Last year the ministry of energy had another plan for a "twin power plants" in Yumurtalik, another green township in south coast. Because of the campaigns and the popular objection, the government had to pause the project. The ministry of environment, however, has played the role of "three monkeys" and therefore seemed to give a green light to such projects, in the name of "development" and "growth" in the national energy production. Although U.S., Canada, Germany and many other North countries have already begun to halt the number of nuclear projects fromtheir agenda; although it was clear that nuclear wastes has a life risk and cannot be get rid of several tens of years; although the world has various bitter experiences of nuclear disasters and threats like Chernobyl or Kozloduy; although there are a number of alternative energy systems... the greediness and utopia of capitalist growth make all governments to have the same passion for overproduction of energy. They adore for a great industrialisation process at all corners of their country, to produce more and more, to export the overproducts and win the "rat race" against the other countries in world trade market..and therefore they die for more profit in their "commercial clashes" with other countries. Turkey has been one of the countries encouraged to dive into such industrialist initiatives for several years. It was advertised within a great image that Turkey was "the closest candidate to the leadership of the MidEastern, Balkanese and the Turkic countries of the former USSR & Middle Asia" and therefore "it should grow itself industrially larger and charge economic power for vanguarding all those countries". Parallel to this, the giants of the capitalist market and their partners inside Turkey have been running for the creation of national demands for an industrial society. The creation of such a mechanical "hi-fi" and "hi-tech" society purely depends on fund & energy supply. While they already have hulky treasures, thus they campaign for the nuclear power plants. They criticise the "primitive" energy systems that already existed in Turkey, and they tell that "if there is no thermal or nuclear power plants, then there is no energy so no electricity for watching TV, for taking shower, for ice cubes in the fridge, hem and haw..." When they see any confrontation against them within green movements, then they say "..those are 'green khmers' or 'green terrorists' who are ignored of getting benefit from the opportunities offered by the age of technology in a silver tray. Those greens want to insist on primitive energy systems and go on peasantry life..." After borrowing huge funds from IMF and World Bank, and after wasting all those for window-dressing development projects (now they can make a speed of 150 km/p.h. with their -foreign- cars on the newly built up highways), this time they try to waste and destruct the ecosystem and the landscape in Turkey. Although there is no development in reducing the debt burden and inflation rate of 50-70 %, or stopping human rights abuses, or serious education of the blown-up population, they are insisting on wasting some more funds on that nuclear plant project and thus rape a unique coastal area. The last initiative for that nuclear power plant in Akkuyu put the green movements and the government face to face in the penalty box. This time the greens are nonviolent again as usual (but angry!) and they formed an action platform against the project. They started for action this month and the lobbying & campaigning efforts are going on both in Turkey and abroad. The number of NGOs and other groups forming the platform reached up to 23 in the first week. The platform made a mass popular demonstration near Akkuyu/Silifke line last month and damned the stupid nuclear projects and disasters in the near past. ARKADAS took place both in the action in Akkuyu/Silifke line and in the campaigning/lobbying efforts. The names and region of the groups established the platform are: -NGOs: ARKADAS (nationwide), SOS Mediterranean Bureau (national HQs in Izmir), Environmental Protection Association (Iskenderun), CETKO- Environmental & Consumer Protection Association (Adana), Association for Protection of Turkey's Nature (Bodrum branch), SOS-Ankara Group (Amkara), SOS Mediterranean Group (Adana branch), Environmental Protection Association of Yenice (Tarsus), Friends of Environment Association (Osmaniye), War Resisters Association (Izmir), Task Force Against Nuclear (Istanbul), SOS-Volunteers (Istanbul), Association for Protection of Turkey's Nature (Antalya branch), NUSHED-Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (Ankara). -GREEN MEDIA: Arkadas-Independent Newspaper, Agackakan, Yesil Cevre, 25. Kare, Yesil Gazete, Patika, Humanist Sanatcilarin Sesi Bulteni, Coelacanth, Cepecevre. The green platform for anti-nuclear action has recently issued a petition against the nuclear projects in Akkuyu. The original text of the petition was also prepared in English by ARKADAS and distributed to the green newsmedia and activists worldwide. All contributions for this campaign are welcome. If you would like to give support to the campaign, please copy or re-write the following petition, try to get more signatures for it and then send it back to the address below: ______________________________________________________________________ To: Mr. Husamettin Cindoruk President of T.B.M.M.
