From english at ozgurluk.xs4all.nl Sun May 9 09:08:28 1999 From: english at ozgurluk.xs4all.nl (english at ozgurluk.xs4all.nl) Date: 09 May 1999 09:08:28 Subject: Torture in Turkey References: Message-ID: TORTURE IN TURKEY Kurtulus, Issue: 25, April 9, 1999 Torture cannot be stopped without fighting against imperialism and defeating the oligarchy According to Amnesty International's report on torture, published at the end of 1998, at least 500,000 people are being tortured annually in almost two- thirds of the world's 193 countries. No doubt, this figure is much smaller than the actual number. In the last year alone, 130 000 people were taken into custody and tortured during the "Peace Operations" in Istanbul. This figure is also important to demonstrate the level of torture in our country. In fact, in the report of Amnesty International, the Turkish oligarchy is at the top of the list of the torturer states. In the above mentioned report, torturer states have been categorised under different headings. Turkey is in the category of the states which have signed the "Human Rights Declaration" but which also torture systematically. The 5th article of the "Human Rights Declaration", which was signed by 48 states, states "Nobody may be tortured or treated inhumanely." Signing the declaration does not make any difference. Torture continues and is increasing, people are dying in custody and are being murdered. When looked at from a wider perspective, it can be seen that torture is being applied not only in our country. People are being tortured in every part of the world. The heaviest torture is applied in the countries which are neo-colonies of Imperialism. This is not a coincidence. It is a result of the relations established with Imperialism. In countries like ours, people are being tortured, mainly, in the name of the Imperialists and their collaborators. Imperialists are the greatest torturers. Their "Human Rights" demagogy is no more than a cover they use to disguise their real nature and legitimate their attacks on the peoples of the world. Torture is not isolated either in our country or elsewhere in the world. They are torturing systematically. This one of the duties of the imperialist headquarters like Pentagon and CIA. To continue their exploitation in every part of the world and to suppress the people's movements which threaten them, they are training torturers, and developing new techniques and tactics in these headquarters. Afterwards, this is put at the service of their collaborators. "According to the Amnesty International, systematic torture is divided into three categories: physical (beating, hanging, electric shocks, burning, breaking bones, killing), psychological (leaving in the dark, isolation, threatening to torture the family as well, sleep deprivation, creating behavioural and perceptional disorders in the person with similar methods), and pharmacological (ruining the chemistry of the brain with drugs and thereby destroying the mental health of the person)" (Cumhuriyet, April 1, 1999). These methods are applied in our country as well. Almost everyone who has been taken into custody has experienced all or some of these torture methods . These torture methods which have been created in the imperialist headquarters did not, of course, come to our country by themselves. The Imperialists taught these methods to officials who were sent to America and other countries for different courses. The torturers who were trained in these countries became "bosses" when they returned to the country and, in turn, trained new torturers. It appears that the imperialists and their collaborators, the greatest enemies of our peoples, are the main ones who are guilty of torture. They torture in order to continue their system of exploitation. Therefore, to be against torture means to be against imperialism and the oligarchy. Torture cannot be ended without defeating oligarchy and drivinging imperialism from our country. So, our struggle is against imperialism and oligarchy. NAME, SURNAME: Zulfu Ozdemir DATE OF BIRTH: October 14, 1967 JOB: Dental technician CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Istanbul/Umraniye, April 6, 1996 TYPES OF TORTURE: Beating, bastinado, hanging, swearing, insults DURATION OF CUSTODY: 5 days CURRENT PLACE: Umraniye Prison (non-political prisoner) I was born in Dersim/Nazimiye. I have been living in Istanbul for many years. I am a democratic person. I earns my living as a dental technician. I was arrested in relation to a murder which had nothing to do with me. I am still held in the Umraniye prison because of this. In order to demonstrate the reality of torture in our country strikingly, I would like to tell about the two previous period in custody that I experienced. On the evening of March 31, 1996, I was sitting and drinking tea with my girlfriend in a cafeteria opposite the Netas in Umraniye. There were many other young people in this place, which we had came to for the first time. We were just about to leave when plain clothed armed policemen entered the cafeteria. They ordered everybody to stand up and show their identity cards, and announced that they were going to make a search. They started to check the identity papers and search the possessions of the people. Then it was our turn. When they looked at our identity papers, they told us to go with them . Only we were arrested among so many people, because I was born in Dersim, and my girlfriend was a student. We told them that we were not going to go with them. When they insisted on taking us, we said "We are innocent. Tell us what our offence is, then we will go with you." They started to hit me and my girlfriend. They swore saying "F... off, you communists!", which I am ashamed to tell. I was very annoyed about their behaviour and insults and felt very degraded. I thought that I had to respond and began to hit out randomly. During this quarrel, they hit me with a rigid object on my head. All of a sudden I was covered in blood. They put us into the car by force. The beating and swearing continued in the car also. After we had been there for a while we answered their questions. We told them that we did not belong to any student movement or organisation, and our only offence was our place of birth. We knew that the policemen were torturers. To get rid of them I lied them. I told them that my heart was working with a battery and artificial valve, and there were plates in my knees and arms. They threatened us, and released us after a while. They had cracked my skull and it was still bleeding. After leaving my girlfriend at her house in Mayday District, I went to the hospital. They put 4 stitches in my head, and gave me a 10-day-rest medical certificate. However, since I did not know the identities and branches of the policemen who tortured me, I could not denounce them. I was demoralised because of being beaten and insulted with my girlfriend. I did not want to see anybody. I didn't leave my work place in Osmanbey for 1 week. On April 6, I went to Umraniye where my house was. When I realised that I was being followed, I started to run. After a 25-minute chase, they caught me in the garden of the Umraniye Zubeyde Hanim Primary School. They began to hit out randomly. Meanwhile they handcuffed my hands behind my back, blindfolded me and put me into a car. People who gathered around us objected to my being taken into custody that way. The policemen lied to the people, saying: "He is a student murderer, he is not innocent" , in order to calm them down. And I told them that the policemen were lying, I was taken into custody just because I was born in Dersim. I shouted my phone number [so that they could inform my family]. The policemen were anxious, they started the car and immediately got out of the district. Kicks, punches, blows with the handle of the guns continued all along the way. They took me to the Gayrettepe security Department. They took my finger prints and photo in the Technical Branch and then took me to the 2nd Branch. First they took me to a dark room. As far as I could see under the blindfold, the floor of the room was covered with pitch. There were long and thick sticks in two high cupboards. There was nothing on me. My eyes and arms were tied. I was receiving blows from every direction. My body was drenched with blood. They were always asking "which organisation" I belonged to. I told them that I did not belong to any organisation but they did not believe me and continued the torture. They laid me on the floor on my back. They tied my feet to a stick then raised it and started to carry out the "bastinado". When my foot bottoms swelled like a balloon, they used to untie my feet, take me by the arm, make me walk, and pour buckets of water on me. Then the bastinado used to start again. The tortures, which seemed endless, came to an end after the hanging. However, I did not admit to anything that I did not do. I did not sign the testimony they prepared themselves. I was released on the 5th day of my custody. Nevertheless, I still have the signs of the torture carried out on me. My right arm is disabled since then. I had physiotherapy for nearly 1 year. When I understood that it was useless, I had an operation. But the operation was also useless. The only torturer policeman I know is named Ahmet Kaya, who is of Kurdish origin. NAME, SURNAME: Arife Dogan DATE OF BIRTH: January 20, 1973 JOB: Teacher CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Istanbul/Bakirkoy, August 7, 1997 TYPES OF TORTURE: Hanging, electric shocks, sexual abuse, pressurised hot and cold water, beating, swearing, and insults. DURATION OF CUSTODY: 4 days CURRENT PLACE:Ankara Central Closed Prison I lived in Tokat till 1997, including my education. In 1990, I started to work as a teacher in Turhal/Tokat. I worked as a handicraft teacher belonging to the Ministry of Education. I continued to work till my arrest. In August 1997, I went to Istanbul to visit my sisters and brothers who were living there. Having drunk tea, while we were going to the bus stop, a crowd of people attacked us. They were trying to close my mouth to prevent my shouting. When the people around attempted to intervene, the attackers shouted out: "we are policemen." They laid me and my friends on the ground. They pointed their guns and other long-barrelled guns at us. Then they frogmarched us into a car. I was trying to ask questions like "Who are you? Where are you taking me?" They did not allow me to talk. They twisted my arms behind my back and pushed my head on to the seat. A little later, one of them said "Give me her bag! Let's have a look at her identity and see who she is." They took us into custody without being sure of who were and putting guns to our heads in front of everybody stating that they were police. In the car, they did not allow me to look anywhere. After a while, the car entered a dark place and stopped. One of the torturers told me "These are your last few hours. Your life must have been this much.", meanwhile another one was saying "Here is Vatan." In this way, I understood that I was being taken to the famous torture place called Vatan. They blindfolded me in the car and dragged me to a room. The first thing they did was to attempt to search me. When I did not allow their immoral search, they attacked and started to hit out randomly with kicks and punches. They tore and removed my clothes. Next, they started the interrogation. They asked me many unrelated things about cities I had never been to, districts I did not know, and actions I did not do. I told them that I have no relation with the places and events they mentioned. I mentioned to them that I lived in Tokat and had come to Istanbul to visit my friends. They faxed the Security Department of Tokat and demanded information from the registrar. Only then did they learn exactly who I was and where I came from. Up until that time, they did not believe my identity papers and claimed that they were fake. Even though everything was clear, they wanted to charge me with actions that had nothing to do with me. When I did not accept they began the torture. First they took me to a room. I could see their faces under the blindfold from time to time. One of them was middle-aged around 35-40, dark- complexioned and bald. Another was around 30-35, blond, and of medium height . The one, who was annoyed when he was called "Adem," was blond and tall. The torturer they called "Karadayi" was always there. In the room I was first hung. They tied my arms behind my back, and tied my feet to my wrists, and pulled me up suddenly. It was as if all the fibres under my arm were broken. It hurt terribly. A little later, they attached weights to my feet to increase the pain. Sometimes, they would release the rope as if they were going to lower me and then raised it again. In the mean time they were all laughing and making fun of me. They were all drunk. The room was full of the stench of foul-smelling alcohol. They left me hanging for a while longer and then lowered me. One of them began to shake my arms and another to check whether there were any broken joints. When they could see that there were not any broken joints, this time they hanged me from my feet, upside down. I do not remember exactly how long these tortures lasted. But the torture did not end. It started again incessantly every 5 minutes. Keeping me under pressured hot and cold water, and electric shocks continued one after the other. I fainted from time to time due to the effects of torture. Whenever I recovered, I shouted and told them that they were dishonourable. Therefore, one of the torturers began to interfere with me sexually by squeezing different parts of my body. Following that, they hung me twice, and kept me under pressurised hot and cold water. Then they took me to another room and asked me to collaborate. They told me that if I signed the testimony they had prepared about some people I did not know, they were going to let me go home, otherwise the Tokat police was going to torture my father, mother, sisters and brothers. When their threats did not work, they took me to the same room and hung me again. This time they kept me hanging for a longer time. While I was swinging about hanging from the rope, the torturers started to eat Turkish pizza, grunting like animals. Once, the telephone rang. It was the wife of one of the torturers. When he finished his conversation with his wife he came near me and told something immoral like "My wife is going mad waiting for me at home. You have wasted our time till 3 a.m." Then I understood that I had been tortured for 9 hours . I don't remember the rest. When I recovered, I was wet and lying in a cell. The tortures went on in the same way during the days which followed. On the 5th day, they told me that I was going to be taken to the state prosecutor's office. First I was taken to the Forensic Medical Office. Although my injuries were clear, they did not give me a report stating that had been tortured. The DGM (State Security Court) prosecutor repeated the questions of the torturers. He did not allow me to talk and told me: "You are trying to present yourself like an innocent new-borne child" I was arrested by the court, and an arrest warrant was issued. NAME, SURNAME: Mustafa Karaagac DATE OF BIRTH: 1975 JOB: Pharmacists assistant CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Adana, September 24, 1993 TYPES OF TORTURE: Death threat by putting a gun to the head, beating, electric shocks, hanging, twisting testicles, pouring cold water, swearing, insults. DURATION OF CUSTODY: 10 days CURRENT PLACE: Bursa Prison It was September 24, 1993... I was startled when a gun was put to my head while I was in a phone box calling a friend of mine. Before I was able to realise what was happening, they jumped on me and laid me on the ground. They did not tell me why I was being taken into custody. They put me into a car with swearing and insults and blindfolded me. Passing through the silent streets of Adana, they took me to an empty and lonely area. There they put a gun to my head and threatened to kill me. Then they took me to Adana Security Department. There they took me to the basement, and started to torture me immediately. They attacked me with kicks and fists and hanged me from a high place from my hands which were tied behind my back. They continued to kick and hit me while I hung there. They gave me electric shocks through cables which they connected to my toes and genital organs. My body contracted under the effect of electricity and I began to swing from left to right. At the same time they were twisting my genital organs. They were trying to increase the effect of the electricity by pouring water on me from time to time. My throat was dry, my heart was palpitating fast. I felt that my body was burning and something was breaking inside me. While these actions continued, they started to pour buckets of cold water on me. After a while, they lowered me from the hanging place and made me walk around the building, sometimes they pulled my arms and tried to make me run. Then, the policewomen joined the torture with their swearing and taunts. Following these, they started physical torture again. They tortured me by giving me electric shocks, beating, twisting my genital organs, and hanging. A torturer called "Samil," whose name I learned later, was both beating and telling how he broke the tongue of and tortured the revolutionist named Remzi Basalak. He told me that I was going to end up like him and no-one could get out of the torture centre without being tortured. The electric shocks and hanging were being carried out with definite breaks.... When I fell exhausted, the torture continued as I was shut up in a narrow, airless cell without a blanket. The torture continued for 10 days... Because my eyes were blindfolded I could not see the faces of many torturers. Their code names were: Efuli, Milis, Komutan, Samil, Hasan Oden... After the 10-day-long torture in the Adana Security Department, I was charged by the court on October 5, 1993. NAME, SURNAME: Haydar Bozkurt DATE OF BIRTH: 1974 JOB: Confectionist CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Istanbul/Avcilar/Parseller, December 29,1995 TYPES OF TORTURE: Death threats and threats about being made to disappear, by opening fire from a distance to rehearse execution, beating, electric shocks, hanging, sexual abuse, twisting testicles, swearing, insults. DURATION OF CUSTODY: 7 days CURRENT PLACE: Sagmalcilar Prison On December 1995, I was taken into custody after a raid on our house in Avcilar/Parseller by 20-30 armed policemen. They made me get into a car and took to the Ambarli Struggle Against Terrorism Police Station. They took all my clothes off at the station. In that condition, they made me wait in a dark and cold cell. Then, they made me got into a car and took me to a place outside the city. As far as I could guess, they took me to either Tekirdag or Cadirkent. There, they took me to a cottage where the torture began. I was hung upside down, given electric shocks, beaten with a stick and subjected to other similar physical tortures. I cannot remember exactly how long the tortures continued but after a while they took me out of the house and made me walk for about 20 minutes in a lonely place. They began to shoot towards me with long-barrelled guns. The bullets were passing by me. Continuously they were insulting me with the words I have never heard before . In this way, they made prosecution and murder tests. The torturers told me "We are from JITEM (Military Intelligence Service). We will kill you just as we killed Duzgun Tekin" Then they made me get into the car again, and took me to the Esenyurt Gendarmerie Station, beating me on the way. They hanged me again in the station, and gave me electric shocks. In the cell I opened the blindfold by rubbing it against the wall. Upon this, 10-15 soldiers came in and beat me with sticks. They took me to a place I do not know, and put into a very dirty cell. There were rats in the cell. Almost 8 hours later, 2 police took me to Istanbul Security Headquarters, Political Branch, Team-1 table. In the room they put me, 5-6 police continuously kicked and insulted me. They interfered with me sexually, and twisted my genital organs . I fainted in the mean time. When I recovered, they were putting my clothes on. They were also telling me "We thought you were dead." Then they put me in a cell. A few hours later, they took me to Orhan Tasanlar, the Security Chief of that time, and his assistant Resat Altay. Tasanlar told me "We are going to kill you, you cannot get out of here alive," and started to beat me with kicks and punches. The other policemen helped Tasanlar. Those who tortured me were Orhan Tasanlar, Resat Altay, the torturers of the Team -1 table, Ambarli Station, and Esenyurt Gendarmerie Station. Then I was tried at the DGM. A doctor inspected me at DGM. The policeman was in the room. The doctor asked whether I have any complaints or not. I told him all of my complaints. The police intervened and said: "He is a communist, nothing has happened to him." The doctor supported the police and said "There is no need to give him a report. Nothing has happened , he won't die." The DGM charged me. NAME, SURNAME: Kiymet Kilinc DATE OF BIRTH: January 1, 1977 JOB: Nurse CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Istanbul/Nurtepe May 29, 1998 TYPES OF TORTURE: beating, hanging, laying on ice, keeping under pressurised water, trying to suffocate with a plastic bag, rape attempt DURATION OF CUSTODY: 8 days CURRENT PLACE: Umraniye Prison I was a member of the Nurtepe/Guzeltepe People's Assembly. I was attending the Culture-Art Commission and trying to solve the health problems of the people of the district since I am a nurse. On May 29, 1998, I was taken into custody during a house raid in Nurtepe. I was talking to a family we visited. At that time someone started banging on the door of the house with their fist. The house was completely surrounded. They leaned over me as soon as the door was opened. They immediately took me to another room and started to ask tens of questions one after another. Because they could not get any answers, they began to hit me on my stomach and back with their guns. They tried to take off my clothes. When I did not permit them to, one of the torturers squeezed my breasts. I said: "Dishonourable!" He said "Shut up, whore! You will see your day!" And they dragged me out of the house, pulling me by my hair. At the same time, mothers, children and old uncles from the neighbouring houses gathered around. They reacted, asking "Where are you taking the girl?" The police were annoyed.... They began to swear again. They were pushing the gas pedal but were unable to move even a centimetre, because the people from the district formed a barricade in front of the car. They could get out of the district by moving centimetres. When they got out of the district they attacked on me again. One of them, continuously molested me sexually, he was swearing, saying "Whore, I will f...you!" About half an hour later I was taken to the torture place called Vatan. They first took Ayhan Mimtas who was arrested with me. Then our landlady and her daughter. I was taken last. They leaned on me, handcuffed my arms, and blindfolded me. They continued the sexual assaults both physically and verbally. They took me in dragging. I opened my eyes. They came and attacked again. We were put into cells one by one. I remembered their saying "We are going to rape you. You can't escape. My hair stood on end. I remembered the woman comrades who had been raped here. 3-4 hours later they came and took me. First, they took my clothes off by force. Then they kept me in front of pressurised water for 5-6 minutes, they gave me a break and then continued again. When I did not reply, they wrapped a plastic bag around my head. They put my head in a bucket full of water. After a time, they took my head out and asked "Are you going to talk?" I did not give an answer and they repeated it. I do not know how much time passed. But I fainted. When I recovered they were trying to remove the water in my lungs. It was clear that they had panicked . Then, they put me on a chair and tried to anally rape me with a truncheon or something similar. One of them was saying "Speak and save yourself, whore, or else we are going to spoil you as well." I fell many things simultaneously. I felt shame. I tried to hide my genital organ and breasts with my hands. For a second I could not give a meaning to my efforts. They continued to kick me. They pulled me by the hair and took me to another place. In that room, there was 5-6 torturers, one of them, called "Yesil," was dark- complexioned, about 1.75-1.80m in height, with a moustache; another one was called "Hans." Hans said "Let's hang her, and she will see her day." I thought for a second what it is like. They tied my arms like a cross. When I was hanged they made fun of my body, squeezed my breasts. I shouted: "Dishonourables!" It was as if it was never going to end. They lowered me 10-15 minutes later, but hanged me up again a little later. This time, they put a chair just below my feet, and told me: "Put your feet on the chair if you want to talk." I brought my feet towards the chair and overturned it. Just at that second, Hans must have thought that I was going to talk so he said "Just like that, my girl!" But when they could not get what they expected they became more aggressive. Yesil told "Take her to 5th floor and perhaps she will pull herself together" They threw me into the cell again, I was exhausted. 7 hours later they came and took me to the 5th floor. They untied my eyes and made me sit in front of a torturer. He was acting the part of the "the good policeman." He talked for a while. Then, 2-3 policemen blindfolded me and laid me down face downwards. The one who was speaking a few seconds ago was now crossing my feet and pulling them towards my head. Each time he pulled, I thought that my something inside me was going to break. I fainted. I came to against with the blows to my face and realised that my clothes had been taken off also. They immediately held me in front of pressurised water and put ice under my arms. In addition, there were ice cubes under me. They shook my arms, but I was not could not feel anything. They were making fun of me: "You will stay in water till you turn green and sprout. In fact, she smells very bad. The whore is being cleaned thanks to us. The one who was making fun of me was called "Rambo" and was always talking with a soft and convincing voice. He had a moustache and was dark- complexioned, grey-haired, and about 1.74 tall. The torturers were always changing, and they were coming one by one. The real head of torturers, "Karadayi," was a fat man; he tortured from Friday night to Monday morning. After the last hanging, they held me in front of pressurised water. Then, they tried to take me naked into the room where other comrades were in. I resisted going into the room. It seemed horrible to me to enter near my comrades naked. I quickly saved myself from that thought. Because if they had realised it, they would have used more force. They brought my clothes and threw them in front of me. My eyes were blindfolded and I could not see anything, but I put on whatever I had in my hand. I was not aware of what I was wearing. And I was continuously trembling. I knew that I should not shiver, but I could not stop shivering. They took me down to the cell. But, I was still ashamed of being taken naked in front of my comrades. I cannot get rid of that thought. They extended our custody period, so that the signs of torture on our bodies healed. At the end of the 8th day, we were charged by the court. NAME, SURNAME: Ali Colak DATE OF BIRTH: March 3, 1971 CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Malatya March 16, 1992 TYPES OF TORTURE: beating, hanging, giving electric shocks, keeping in a small cupboard while handcuffed, swearing, insults, death threats, burying naked in snow, beating in the snow DURATION OF CUSTODY: 8 days CURRENT PLACE: Bartin Prison During the operations which were started after the punishment of the collaborator Kemal Kaplan in Malatya/Kurecik, I was taken into custody on March 16, 1992 in Malatya. They forced me to get into a car and took me to Malatya Security Headquarters. They wanted me to tell them the place where the guerrillas were and admit that I carried out the intelligence work on Metin Kaplan. For that purpose they started to torture me without respite. When I was taken into custody, they first tried to influence me psychologically. They just told me "Think a little, we will talk to you later" and were going out when I replied "I have nothing to think about" and they immediately attacked on me. They took of my clothes forcefully, laid me on the ground and started to beat me. Then they gave electric shocks. This continued for almost an hour. Next they hanged me. While I was hanging, they continued the torture by giving me electric shocks, beating me , and twisting my genital organs. This also continued for nearly an hour. Then they lowered me and took me out. They handcuffed me behind my back, blindfolded me, and made me get into a car. They drove out of the city. One of them they called "Apo", while the others called each other "Hoxha." With the orders he was giving, the torturer called Apo made it known that he was the one in charge. While the car was moving the torturer called Apo ordered the others: "Open his eyes and let's see his face." He was a very big man with a very thin voice. They made me get out of the car outside the city. They stripped me naked and buried me in the snow. They tortured me in the snow by hitting me with their boots. Another one took his gun and threatened me saying "Get up and run, we will shoot you in the back, and then say that we shot you while you were escaping." It was 12 o'clock at night when I was brought back to the headquarters. They put me into a cupboard in a cell while I was handcuffed behind my back. I stayed there till morning. I could neither sit nor turn left or right in the cupboard. In the morning they took me to the torture room again. There I was threatened with death: "You did not tell us anything, we are going to hand you over to the other team, if you tell them anything we will kill you. " The team I was going to be handed over to was Fikret Isinkaralar and his team from Istanbul. Fikret Isinkaralar started the torture by acting like a priest. However, when he could not get any result, he soon showed his real face. He was especially trying to make me admit that I carried out the intelligence work on Kemal Kaplan. The tortures followed one another with swearing, insults, hanging, electric shocks, beating, death threats, and threatening to torture my family. In fact they had already tortured my family by making my 10-year-old brother wait in the snow for hours and keeping my 65-year- old father in custody for 2 days. On the basis of some previous statements, Fikret Isinkaralar especially wanted me to give names. When I told him that I did not recognise them, he continued the torture. The torture went on for 4 days. On the 5th day, I accepted the testimonies on me and testified. The torturers called each other Hoxha, Kazim, and Cellat. I was arrested by Bartin DGM on March 23, 1992. I am still in Bartin prison. NAME, SURNAME: Sergul Hatice Albayrak DATE OF BIRTH: May 30, 1978 CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Yagmurlu/Tokat, August 21, 1997 TYPES OF TORTURE: beating, swearing, insults, rape, death threats DURATION OF CUSTODY: 5 days CURRENT PLACE: Sakarya Prison On August 21, 1997, at noon, the minibus I took was going from Niksar to Tokat when it was stopped by the gendarmerie. I was taken into custody to be taken to the Belde Station. As soon as I was made to get off the minibus, I was surrounded by almost 10 soldiers. My bags were searched in detail. Even though they were not authorised to search the ladies, they wanted to search me. I did not allow them to do so. We got on the road with their military vehicle. A little later they stopped the car in a lonely place and handcuffed me. Because the route that I was taken into custody on was a busy one vehicles were passing by continuously. When the road became deserted, they stopped the vehicle, pressed a gun to my head and blindfolded me. I was threatened with death on the road. In this way I was brought to the Tokat City Gendarmerie Command Centre. At the entrance to the city, they uncovered my eyes. After nearly 8 ranked soldiers examined my identity papers, passport, etc. they turned to me and asked my name. I told them: "It is written there." Upon this, they threw the documents they held in their hands in my face and attacked me with kicks and punches. Then they dragged me to the cells on the bottom floor. The same day, they took me three times to the room where they were going to torture me later. The floors of that room were covered with a carpet wall to wall and there were many blood spots on the carpet. Because I came from Germany, they were continuously asking whether I was a citizen of Germany or not. And they wanted me to talk. I told them that I did not know why they had taken me into custody and that I wanted to meet my lawyer. They were replying with kicks and punches. Towards the evening, they took me from the cell to Tokat Gynaecological Hospital. By force they carried out the dishonourable inspection that I can never accept. When they got the report they wanted from there, they took me back to the Command Centre. At night they took me to that same room again, and continued the inquiry. Continuously, they were threating that it would be terrible for me if I did not talk. As I did not testify, as I did not talk, they were attacking with kicks and punches. Later they added sexual assault to these. During the inquiries, I was handcuffed and my eyes were blindfolded. Under these conditions they took my clothes of by force, and sexually assaulted me with their hands. Two friends were made to watch the torture they carried out on me and then taken away. I could hear the sounds of the tortures carried out on them. They told me that if I did not testify, they were going to take me to a mountain, kill me, place a gun in my hand and claim that they killed me during a clash. They were attacking like mad dogs. Together with the sexual assaults by hand they threatened me with rape by all the soldiers. In the mean time some of them were acting the priest. They were giving me a break from torture and offering me a cigarette, etc. Things continued like that for a while. While torturing their disgusting hands and faces were always moving over my body. At one time, all but two left the room. Somebody with a military rank and another one who may be a confessor stayed in the room. They locked the door, and told those outside that they might leave. While one of them was holding me the other was trying to rape. Thinking of "preventing" this I agreed to testify. And I testified. But the torturers did not have honour and rectitude. I could not behave with this consciousness. Although I testified, they raped me. After they raped me they made me repeat my testimony various times. They were always wanting more. Towards the 3rd day of my custody they took me to the 2nd floor of the building. The same dirty, immoral methods continued there as well. The sexual assaults started again. They tied my eyes and hands. A torturer with a military rank raped me. On August 26, they took me to the hospital again, but I was not inspected. They wrote a report stating that I had not been tortured. After being shown to the press, I was charged and taken to the Tokat prison. The torturer who raped me was darkish, 1.85m tall, 90-95 kg., hair lightly fell out on the front and combed to the right, large eyes, military rank, speaking with Tokat dialect. Another one: 1.90-1.95m tall, dark skinned, grey haired, large moustache, wide forehead, flat nose, 45-50- year-old, speaking with a Kurdish dialect. He was coordinating and directing the torturers one by one. The one I thought to be a confessor: 1.75-1.80 m tall, thin, dark, 20-25-year-old. He was giving advice to torturers about the method and continuously controlling the people in custody. Kurtulus, Issue: 26, April 16, 1999 "SOME UNPLEASANT EVENTS MAY OCCUR..." During his visit to ODTU (Middle East Technical University) on March 25, when Demirel found himself faced with students asking questions about torture, he replied "Some unpleasant events may occur..." and continued: "There are human rights violations in Turkey. But, these mostly consist of ill-treatment, beating, and torture at the police stations." (Cumhuriyet, March 26, 1999). As he continued his speech, Demirel blamed the uneducatedness of the police for torture and closed the subject. Think! The president of a country is calmly admitting that the state which he is head of carries out torture, and moreover is trying to smooth over these by calling them "unpleasant events." No doubt, there is nothing to be surprised at in speeches like this. These are one face of the democracy game in our country. These are the rules of the democracy game: You are going to keep secret what you did, pretend that nothing has happened , and try to fool people. You are going to violate your own laws, torture, steal, treat unjustly but pretend that nothing has happened. The democracy game is being played about the torture as well. Here are the TEN GOLDEN RULES of the democracy game about TORTURE: 1-The presidents, prime ministers, and ministers are going to say either "There is no torture," or that it is "isolated," or that "There is torture, but these are unpleasant events." 2-When the reaction of the people intensifies, a few commissions like the commission for investigating torture are going to be established in the TBMM (The Parliament of the Republic of Turkey), which will pretend that they are focusing on a few cases, and all these will be concluded as "unfortunately torture was carried out, but it won't happen again and we have issued new circulars on this matter" 3-If the bourgeois press writes about a few events a few times, the "evil intentioned policemen" are going to be blamed for torture, and whatever is necessary to disguise the fact that the state is a torturer state is going to be done... 4-At the Forensic Medical Office, the victims of torture are not going to be given reports, and their treatment is going to be covered up. 5-The denunciations made by the people who have been tortured are not going to be taken into account, the trials are going to be spread over time and ended due to prescription. Moreover, people are going to be sentenced to more than tens years imprisonment as a result of testimonies signed under torture. 6-If a torturer is tried by chance, he is going to be acquitted, and if a torturer is arrested he is going to be released and promoted. 7-The international agreements prohibiting torture are going to be signed, and similar laws are going to be enacted in the country to deceive the country and world public opinion. 8-The torturers are going to be trained with the techniques of the CIA, the latest technology on this field is going to be followed and all expenses will be covered. Maximum care will be shown to do all these secretly, no information will be made public. 9-Those who are murdered under torture are immediately going to be said to have died due to "heart attack", "jumping from the window," "knocking their head on the wall," "hanging themselves with their underclothes in the toilet" and those who say that they were killed by torture are going to be declared to be "traitors who want to put our police off" and they are also going to be taken into custody and silenced. 10-The torture is going to be continued everywhere and everytime, the people are going to be forced to surrender by torture and murder. Of course, we wrote these rules in this form. But, written or not, this is the summary of the torture policy being applied in our country. The reality of torture in our country has been applied within the framework of these rules for years as a state policy. Of course, against the torture rules of the torturer Susurluk state, the people have their own rules. These rules have now been turned into a badge and slogan and placed in the peoples language: HUMAN DIGNITY WILL DEFEAT TORTURE!... WE HELD AND WILL HOLD THE FASCIST MURDERERS ACCOUNTABLE !... Yes, these two slogans are the expression of the people's attitude and thoughts against the torturer Susurluk state. The first one is the expression of the fact that the torturers who say "Here, we are the god and the prophet" in the torture centres are always defeated by revolutionary honour. The second one states how our people, who cannot find justice in the system's courts, have had and will have their demand for people's justice fulfilled.. At the same time, these are the expressions of the aspiration for a country where there is no torturer or torture, where justice and honour are the most important virtues, and which is completely free and democratic. This aspiration will certainly come true one day... Kurtulus, Issue: 26, April 16, 1999 TORTURE IS RIGHT BESIDE US Although for decades the spokesmen of oligarchy, the security department authorities, have been saying "There is no torture", and "Torture is isolated"; every man alive in this country knows that this state tortures . When torture is mentioned, everybody first thinks about the police. Therefore, our people do not want to be obliged to apply to the police. For the same reason they say: "A bear does not make good fur, a policeman does not make good friend." Of course, these judgements did not emerge out of nothing. They emerged as a result of the tortures, attacks, and murders by the police, which celebrated its 154th anniversary on April 10, 1999. In fact, to be faced with torture, one does not have to be "political" or be taken into custody because of an action which is an offence according to the current laws. It is a common practice to come across tortures, at least like beating, swearing, etc. even in local police stations. Just a few weeks ago , in Antalya, parents who were trying to take their children to the doctor were attacked on the road, in broad daylight; this event is a summary of the reality of torture in our country. If this family had been taken into custody and brought to the police station, what they were going to experience is not difficult to work out. Everybody can guess what the policemen, who attack a family in front of the eyes of everybody and on a road, can do when away from people's eyes. Of course, in our country torture is not being carried out by the police alone. It is carried out at the military headquarters, gendarmerie stations, and the official and para- official institutions like JITEM, MIT (National Intelligence Institution). But the police headquarters are at then top of the list of places where people are tortured or torture is wide-spread. This is not a consequence of the others being lesser torturers, but rather of the police being more acquainted with people in accordance with its role in the "inner security" system. TORTURE IS WIDELY CARRIED OUT AT THE SECURITY HEADQUARTERS IN THE CITY CENTRES Although torture is carried out in all police centres, it is carried out most systematically and widely at the security headquarters. Some of them are also "famous" beyond the country borders. The previous Gayrettepe, now Vatan in Istanbul, the DAL (Deep Research Laboratory) in Ankara, the 1800 Evler in Elazig, and the headquarters of Aydin, Manisa are a few of these. However, among the others, one of them leads the others in torturing, killing and disappearances. These arethe 1st Branch, the old, Struggle Against Terror (TEM) branches under a new name. As also can be seen from the statements of torture victims, even though in different cities, they were certainly taken to the TEM branches of the Security Headquarters and were tortured there. Torture continues 24 hours a day in TEM branches. Those who say "There is no torture", and "Torture is isolated" may come across torture at any time of the day at the TEM branch of any security headquarters. Don't the ministries or other related institutions know about these events? Sure they do! However, they do not even think about investigating. However, what suits their purpose is to hide torture and to protect the torturers. The scene accidentally seen by Manisa CHP (Republican People's Party) MP Sabri Ergul who went to Manisa Security Headquarters when the students known by the public as "Youth from Manisa," is not isolated. This MP saw a youth being tortured behind a door he opened by chance. While the torturers were telling Sabri Ergul that that the young people who had been taken into custody were well, these young people were being tortured in the next room. The torturers did not find any inconvenience in torturing fearlessly. Yes, torture is not being carried out in secret places. In the security headquarters in the center of every city, torturers are carrying out torture on a wide scale. Perhaps you pass by one of these buildings every day. .. torture continues in one floor of these buildings, which you pass by while going work, returning home, or walking, or perhaps you enter for a legal matter. At that moment, torturers may be giving electric shocks to their victim, or hanging him. Perhaps, they are murdering him, just as they did to Baki Erdogan, Suleyman Yeter, and hundreds of others. .. Therfore, we suggest that you look carefully at these cruelty fortresses. And do not forget that there is no other power to destroy them except the people's own power and justice. -- Ozgurluk.Org For justice, democracy and human rights in Turkey and Kurdistan! Some radio stations put the number of demonstrators at 100,000. The demonstrators had defied the ban imposed on May Day demonstrations by the ministry of interior on the 26th of April . According to reports received by Workers Left Unity passers by stood and clapped as the workers made their way from Baharestan Square to Hassan Abad. During the demonstration, security forces attacked demonstrators as they were dispersing, injuring some of the workers and arresting others. According to some reports confrontation between the workers and security forces lasted till late afternoon. Similar demonstrations took place in other Iranian cities including Tabriz and Khoramabad .Last week Workers Left Unity Iran and the Committee to defend the struggles of the Iranian workers made a joint call for May Day demonstrations in Iranian cities This unprecedented co-operation that united almost all the Organisations of the radical Left was well received in Iran where the working class and its supporters have always criticised organsiations of the Left for unnecessary splits and sectarian politics. We had no illusion about the significance of our call and we were well aware that in the current political situation the semi official House of Labour is also likely to encourage demonstrations as indeed it did a day before 1st of May. However the crucial issue was that for the first time in 20 years Iranian workers demonstrated for their just demands and against the regime and established their right to do so. Iranian President Mohamad Khatami condemned the protests adding that social unrest was disruptive to the nation's economic security one day after thousands of workers protested in Tehran . Echoing the concerns of Iranian capitalists Khatami said: "Providing a calm and safe atmosphere for investment and production in the country requires a national drive" . >From the news Bulletin of Workers Left Unity 4/5/99 email :web at etehadchap.com fax: 44 141 330 4316 or 46 31 139 897 From theorganizer at igc.org Mon May 10 13:26:26 1999 From: theorganizer at igc.org (theorganizer at igc.org) Date: 10 May 1999 13:26:26 Subject: LABOR ANTIWAR STATEMENTS & APPEALS Message-ID: LABOR ANTIWAR STATEMENTS & APPEALS [NOTE: This is a mailing from the International Liaison Committee for a Workers' International (ILC). We have published a three-part email dossier that is essential reading for all unionists and activists concerned about the war in ex-Yugoslavia. ? ALAN BENJAMIN (ILC)] ______ IN THIS EMAIL POSTING The International Liaison Committee for a Workers' International (ILC) wishes to inform its supporters of two important statements regarding the current war in ex-Yugoslavia. The first is a resolution adopted by the San Francisco Labor Council (AFL-CIO) on April 26, 1999, in opposition to the U.S./NATO bombings and intervention in ex-Yugoslavia. (The resolution had been previously endorsed by the SF Labor Council's Executive Board on April 21.) This important resolution could serve as a model for the adoption of similar resolutions in labor bodies across the United States and internationally. The second text is a sign-on appeal issued by the ILC calling for an end to the U.S./NATO intervention in this region. The ILC urges all supporters of labor and human rights to endorse this statement. This text is being circulated in more than 60 countries. It has already gathered tens of thousands of signatures. Following these two statements is a call for an Antiwar Demonstration in San Francisco on May 15. All unionists and activists in the S.F. Bay Area are urged to attend. The leaflet calling for the May 15 demonstration includes the full text of the antiwar resolution adopted by the San Francisco Labor Council. ? A.B. *** (1) San Francisco Labor Council (AFL-CIO) resolution on the war in ex-Yugoslavia Whereas, NATO forces under the leadership of the United States have unleashed massive air strikes against Yugoslavia designed, in the words of NATO officer in charge, U.S. General Wesley Clark, to "demolish, destroy, devastate, degrade, and ultimately eliminate the essential infrastructure" of the country, and, Whereas, the U.S. government is allocating billions for war to destroy among other things, bridges, apartment buildings, and factories, as opposed to spending our resources to improve the quality of life in the U.S., and to assist in the productive development of the Balkans and elsewhere, and, Whereas, the massive bombing is contributing to and has in fact severely exacerbated the plight of the ethnic Albanians of Kosovo who are persecuted by the Milosevic regime but whose right to self-determination has never been supported or recognized by the United States or NATO. Therefore Be It Resolved, that the San Francisco Labor Council calls for an end to the war, an immediate halt to the NATO/U.S. bombing of Yugoslavia, and an end to the intervention. Be It Further Resolved, that the San Francisco Labor Council rejects the notion that the U.S. government has, by military might, the legal, or moral right to intervene and police the world in such disputes, and, Be It Further Resolved, that this resolution be sent to the National AFL-CIO, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and to President William Clinton." ***** (2) ANTIWAR TELEGRAM International Liaison Committee for a Workers' International (c/o Parti des Travailleurs, 87, rue du Fg St Denis, 75010 Paris, France) [Note: The International Liaison Committee for a Workers' International, founded on January 1991 in Barcelona (Spain) while war was being waged against the people of Iraq, adopted then a Manifesto Against War and Exploitation. Towns and village of Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro are being crushed by bombs. All the peoples of the region are threatened by a massacre without precedent. More than 100,000 inhabitants of Kosovo are being forced into exodus. This murderous intervention proves it: Those who have launched these bombings are no concerned about peoples' right to self determination. They have no concern for any of the Balkan people's right to self-determination. This intervention proves it: The major powers have never intended to protect any part of the population from massacre. We say: This war is not our war. This war is a war against the right of all peoples in the Balkans region to self-determination. This war is the war led by the multinationals against the workers and all the peoples. It is a war to push for the total privatisation of the economies of the region. It is a war against democracy. The reason for the arrests were that our friends were staying in the UK without a valid permit. In fact the aim of the British Police is different than that. The police offered them to co-operate with police and be an informer. If they would agree to co-operate, they have been promised to receive any legal help from the police and the necessary permit of stay would be supplied. Otherwise, they have said that they would be sent to Turkey. The following lines are what exactly the police have told them: ?Do you know what had happened to Meryem Altun who went to Turkey? They would also send you to be killed there but we saved your life?" The threat of the police is clear. Meryem Altun was arrested in Turkey and sent to prison after being subjected to heavy torture. If you do not co- operate with us. You will also face the same consequences. ?We will hand you to the torturers in Turkey" The court case of our friend KASIM ARMUTLU is continuing in Turkey with the demand of the prosecution of imprisonment for 12,5 (twelve and a half) years . On the other hand, MURAT TURK, and his revolutionary identity are known by both Turkish and British police since he was involved in political activities in the both countries. In case of their extradition, the consequences will be too heavy to have the responsibility. They will be tortured for days and be imprisoned for many years. They do not posses proper credentials and therefore the danger of being killed and made disappeared is very high. And both the British Government and Police will be responsible of these consequences. We are concerning the lives of our friends. The attitude of the police during their detention has increased our concerns. The lives of KASIM ARMUTLU and MURAT TURK are in danger. We invite all individuals, institutions and press to be more sensitive and defend their right to live. MURAT TURK AND KASIM ARMUTLU CANNOT BE EXTRADITED TO TURKEY! FREE OUR FRIENDS! must be abolished completely! Message-ID: KURTULUS on the road to independence and democracy May 20, 1999 THE STATE SECURITY COURTS MUST BE ABOLISHED COMPLETELY! Directed by the MGK (National Security Council), the 57th. government announced "new decisions" regarding the DGM's (State Security Courts). While the military judges and prosecutors are being removed, the Justice department are preparing two constitutional drafts the civilise the DGM's. This policy, completely steered by the MGK, together with this constitutional reform based on paragraph 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 of article 143 of the constitution, gives the appearance of a democratisation and change in the direction of human rights. Well, what will change? Will people who voice their thoughts no longer land in jail because the military judges have been replaced by civilians? Will the previous DGM decisions be revoked? Will the DGM's free themselves from the MGK and decide independently? Of course not. Appointing civilian judges and prosecutors and other changes cannot abolish the illegitimate practices of the DGM's. The demand of those who speak of democracy and human rights cannot be the "civilisation of the DGM's", it must be: "close down the State Security Courts and revoke all their decisions". Just recently the oligarchy isolated Abdullah OEcalan on the island of Imrali and prevented that he was put together with the friends he stands in court with. It is attempted to accuse and sentence the Kurdish national liberation struggle, in the person of Abdullah OEcalan, by means of the totally illegitimate State Security Courts, robbing OEcalan from the conditions for a free defence. At this point the demand for abolishing the DGM's and revoking all their decisions, as well as the demand for ending the pressure on the courts, must be strengthened. -- Ozgurluk.Org For justice, democracy and human rights in Turkey and Kurdistan! ANNIVERSARY MEETING OF NATO IS ANOTHER DECLARATION OF WAR OF IMPERIALISM AGAINST THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD NATO is celebrating its 50. anniversary. The greatest criminals of the world met last week in Washington to agree on a "new strategic concept" of this war machine. According to the bourgeois press, the oligarchy delegation led by Demirel achieved a diplomatic victory at this meeting. What was talked about at this meeting? The NATO-meeting starting in the shadow of the bombs which are dropped on Yugoslavia. About all the imperialists and their collaborators congratulated each other with their success in Yugoslavia. Then they began their secret meetings. It was known that NATO, organised for a Cold War period and judicially legitimising its existence with the "protection of its members against a possible expansion of the communist regimes into Europe", would attempt to create some kind of legitimacy for its attack plans against the peoples of the world at this meeting. NATO did not want to bind itself to a international judicial norm or institution. The attacks in recent years in several regions of the world and the statements of the imperialist cadres sufficiently show what kind of world they are striving for. For example, the criminal attack against Iraq was carried out with violating all international treaties. The attack against Yugoslavia makes it even more clear. Yugoslavia is a sovereign state, represented in the UN. It signed several international treaties. Its existence as a state was recognised by all other states. Not a single parliament of any nation has declared war against Yugoslavia. The imperialists defended their attack against Iraq with the argument "there is a UN resolution". But regarding Yugoslavia even such a resolution does not exist. But NATO relentlessly launched its attacks, almost as if it was saying: "We rule the world, nothing goes without us". The US: the supreme leader of the imperialist world As a consequence of the "new strategic concept of NATO", the US pushed through its chief position in the entire imperialist world. As can be seen with the attacks against Yugoslavia, in the end it is accepted what the US want. There are still deep contradictions between the imperialists, but for the realisation of their common goals, these contradictions are put aside for the moment. What the Turkish oligarchy presented as a "diplomatic victory" on this 50th. anniversary was in fact a result of such a contradiction. The European imperialists had prepared, albeit within the framework of NATO, a relatively independent plan for the defence of Europe to limit the intervention of the USA in their "own region". Of course this plan resulted in another treaty between the European imperialists and Turkey was excluded from this. Because of the decided opposition of Turkey, and the direct support of the US for Turkey, this plan was rejected, resulting in the legitimisation of direct US intervention in Europe, as was the case already before. In the end, the imperialists accepted the US as their boss, as the world police force which solves all their problems. Nothing new. The other imperialists try to stab each other in the back, always prepared to ask the US for support in case they need it. They cannot stand up against it. An example is the statement of Joscka Fischer, the German secretary of Foreign Affairs: "... I told Milosevic that he was entering a war with the US. I told him Germany had attempted that twice this century and that the results were catastrophic. But I wasn't able to convince him..." (April 15, 1999, Milliyet). It also quite telling that the leaders of the other NATO countries ran away during a meeting, ignoring the internal protocol and Solano, to shake hands with Clinton... The attacks against Iraq and Yugoslavia are proof of what kind of world NATO is striving for. According to NATO's statements, the imperialist world is nowadays confronted with three major threats which somehow have to be removed. When these threats are presented as "against humanity, democracy and human rights", this is just a formality. What is in fact endangered, are there own interests. Looking at these "threats", this can clearly be seen: The first threat: the countries which resist imperialism. Besides the socialist countries, these are mostly regimes with petite-bourgeois dictatorships at the top and with anti-imperialist characteristics. The targets of imperialism are those countries, from Cuba and Korea to Vietnam, which are outside of the market of imperialism. But attacking those countries is not that easy because conditions are not favourable at the moment. Also countries like Libya, Iraq, Syria, and in general those countries which are labelled as "terrorist" or as "countries which support terrorism" belong to that category. The imperialist attack against Yugoslavia, or Iraq for that matter, aims at forcing these countries to their knees to push through the imperialists' plans in these regions without obstacles. When they succeed to neutralise these petite-bourgeois dictatorships, similar regimes in the region and the peoples there will be intimidated as well. The new decisions of NATO in fact are about relentless oppression of those countries which pose a threat to imperialism. The second threat: non-governmental agents. Klaus Naumann, chairman of NATO's military command staff, stated mid April: "The danger of the Warsaw Pact has been removed. But the picture of Europe is full of unclarities and instabilities... The USA, the strongest coalition partner in NATO, has taken a sensitive attitude towards non-state actors. Nobody can defeat the USA military. But this kind of organisations could pose a threat." The people's liberation movements are the greatest fear of the imperialists. The petite-bourgeois dictatorships are an obstacle for the realisation of the imperialists' plans. But regarding the system, the cannot pose a serious threat. These regimes can be kept under control at a certain point while people's liberation movements or revolutionary movements present a uncontrolable and invaluable force. The imperialists can wage a war against Iraq, against Yugoslavia, because the strength opposing them, seen as an enemy, is clear. But they cannot fight the people's liberation movements with the same methods, because now the "enemy" is everywhere. That's what they mean with the phrase "actors outside of the state". The essence of their fear is that, although all the conditions seem to be given, they cannot wipe out the liberation movements. The New World Order couldn't force the peoples on their knees. Their statements, like "co-operation against terrorism" or "fighting international terrorism", as well as deploying NATO forces in this sense, are an expression of their deepest fears. The third threat: regional conflicts and elements of instability. NATO describes regional (and ethnic) conflicts as the third threat. The imperialists do not oppose regional wars, or peoples slaughtering each other, incited by nationalism. They themselves pull the strings, because they make a profit when peoples are massacred. They don't mean those conflicts, they mean the conflicts which arise outside of their control, harming the stability of their imperialist exploitation in the regions. Such conflicts can emerge when the countries, labelled as "terrorist states" by imperialism, openly resist them, or when the wars of the people's liberation movements expand. NATO, the ruler of the world, The USA, the boss of NATO. Caspar Weinberger, former Defence secretary of the US and now busy with imperialist propaganda, recently stated: "NATO was the most successful defence organisation in history and its task was the same as it is now: making sure that Europe isn't conquered, and that the people can live in peace and security. This mission hasn't changed. But there are now several ways to reach this goal and sometimes NATO goes over to attack." In short: in the past NATO could not directly attack system to protect the imperialist interests. But now the conditions because of the opposing socialist system. But now the conditions exist. NATO is the "organisation of the North Atlantic Pact" and its founding protocol states that it was founded for the security of Europe. This means that its operation areas is limited to Europe. But this changed with the 50th. anniversary meeting. NATO claims the right to intervene and attack all over the world. According to the their statement, such interventions should be in "accordance with the UN". The answer who else agreed to this right is simple: nobody. NATO proclaims itself as the ruler of the world. NATO rules the world and with the pretext that no time can be lost, NATO doesn't take anybody into consideration, not even the UN, in itself nothing more than a marionette of imperialism. There is nothing behind all the words and the show of force, just emptiness. The imperialists cannot rule the world. This becomes clear when we look at what was experienced with the New World Order in the past years. While they expected a rose garden without any thorns, there were numerous conflicts all over the world, harming the interests of the imperialists, and a lot of new movements emerged. This process will find its own way and destroy imperialism in the end. The peoples of the world will emerge is victors. The UCK, a sham army... The guerrilla of imperialism. The imperialists and the collaborating media in our country are building up the UCK. This exaggeration goes from numbers to organising. They speak of the UCK as if it was some kind of extraordinary organisation, at the threshold of taking power. We have not seen before that imperialism praises a national liberation movement in such a way. Of course there were other organisations which were praised by imperialism. Like for example the Taliban in Afghanistan who now massacre the Afghans, hanging them in electricity poles. Even a Rambo film was made for them. Imperialism also praised the contra's in Nicaragua, calling them "freedom fighters". They also liked the fascist collaborators whom they brought to power in Vietnam. There were many murderers and contra's, many fascists and racists, which were liked by imperialism. When nowadays the UCK is made big with the same praises, this alone confirms that the UCK is active for the interests of imperialism. There is a lot of proof that the UCK is organising as the guardian of the imperialist interests in the Balkan. The UCK, the contra-organisation of imperialism... Sejdiu is complaining the most that they are being "misrepresented". They are labelled as religious, and even as Marxists, but they only pursue one line. They are waging "a fight for independence". When given the necessary means, they will achieve victory... These words stem from Pleurat Sejdiu, the European representative of the UCK. The UCK spokesperson essentially presents the picture of a contra organisation, used by imperialism. It exploits what is sacred to the peoples, trying to appear sympathetic. UCK! "fighting for freedom". UCK! "fighting for the liberation of the people of Kosovo". UCK! "waging the holiest of wars". This is how the UCK is presented by their spokesman. And he adds that they will win when they "possess the necessary means". What are these "necessary means"? How are they to be created? The UCK-representative simply says: NATO should give us "anti-tank weapons, rocket launchers, tanks and mortars". (April 22, 1999, Milliyet) Thus he is saying: "NATO should give is weapons, and we will finish the job". What kind of a "national" organisation is this? For whose interests is it fighting? Did a liberation movement ever win with the help of weapons from imperialism? They are collaborators. The lesson which should be learned from this is: this collaboration was created through nationalism, feeding on it. Its essence is to collaborate with NATO, based on the animosity towards the Serbs. One can also say: this nationalism collaborates with the enemy of all peoples, based on being against a people, and pretending to defend the interests of a certain nation. The European representative Sejdiu says: "In our ranks there is only room for Albanians. We will liberate our soil ourselves". But the whole world knows that those who have been brainwashed and who travel from New York to Kosovo, are wearing uniforms with the American flag on them, preparing to shoot people. They are trained and supplied by the imperialists. Whose "guerrilla" is it? The bourgeois and imperialist media normally avoid the word "guerrilla" as much as possible. Because the world "guerrilla" has always had a positive connotation among the people. "Guerrilla" has become the name of those who are fighting in the mountains and cities for the liberation of the peoples.. This was the case yesterday, and it will be the case tomorrow. Because of this, the imperialists and their lackeys fear this word. They said "terrorist"... They said "gang"... But they never said "guerrilla"... Because the guerrilla represents hope. The word primarily generates hope. The guerrilla are those who fight against the tyrants, the exploiters and parasites. They are the children of the people. They are the ones who are willing to face death, the ones who are prepared to die for their people. Guerrilla means the trust that the people can achieve victory. The imperialists and their collaborators know this. That's why the guerrilla is their nightmare. Until recently they feared the word "guerrilla". But now this is all they talk about when they talk about Kosovo and the UCK. It's interesting, the UCK, until recently, was labelled as "terrorists" by the USA. Because they were not controlled by them and the other imperialist forces, especially Germany. What has changed? When asked, the European representative answered: "In the mean time all understood who we are. That's the reason for the NATO support". What he is saying is: "when you harm the interests of the imperialists, of the USA, when you fight against them or their stability, then you are a terrorist. When you are a collaborator, when you do not harm the interests of imperialism, when you guarantee to protect them, then you are a freedom fighter, a "guerrilla". The UCK is precisely such a guerrilla. A sham guerrilla. The guerrilla of imperialism... -- Ozgurluk.Org For justice, democracy and human rights in Turkey and Kurdistan! Message-ID: Kurtulus, Issue: 29, May 7, 1999 THE ELECTIONS ENDED.... WHAT ABOUT TORTURE?... "Our dear and venerable citizens WE WILL PREVENT TORTURE..... WE WILL CALL TORTURERS TO ACCOUNT!!!...." Of course, none of the parties told such things during the elections... Can you believe that, even though torture has been so widely applied in this country, none of the parties have even mentioned about it! They have not even promised to prevent torture... But, could they have made such a promise? Or, if they had, who would have believed them? All right, could you imagine the fascists from MHP making a promise like this? Of course, it is not even possible to imagine! The reason is obvious. When MHP is mentioned, everybody in this country remembers massacres, attacks, tortures. This is natural. Because, the fascists from MHP, have been functioning like an enemy-of-the-people organisation which meets "torturer murderer need" of the state for tens of years. Of course, the other parties of the system are neither more innocent nor more believable of this subject. Whoever comes to power, the torture will continue fearlessly. The "suicides" at Police Headquarters will increase. Heaven only knows why, such healthy people will "prefer" the police stations in order to commit "suicide." Another election has been made and passed in the country, but it is clear that nothing will change. Everybody witnessed and exeperienced this period. Both those who voted and those who did not, know very well that nothing will evolve towards positive afterwards. Look, the coalition arithmetics started again... But, this arithmetics is not for serving better to the people; but what is being discussed is who will apply better the robbery, exploitation, and cruelty policies of Americanist, collaborator trusts. DSP, MHP, ANAP, or another one, at the end they will establish a government to be of use to the trusts. Nothing will change, massacres, robbery, exploitation and torture will go on. Because "what they did is a guarantee of what they will do." For instance, have a look at the dates of the narrations published within the Torture series till now. All of them belong to different years and a different system party was in power during all these years. You will see that even though the system parties and governments change, what does not change is the attacks on the people and torture. In fact, all of the parties, who exceeded the election barrier and entered the parliament, have all took part in the governments. Among them, the one which did not directly take part in the government after 1980 coup is MHP. Anyway, it is a party which provides cadre to the army, police, and special team; those who directly attack the people. As put forward by the members of MHP with the words "our ideology is in power" during the coup years, MHP has always been in power... DSP, MHP, ANAP, CHP (SHP), FP, DYP... All of them were in power in the years during which torture was widespread. However, the condition did not change when one or another came to power. Because, torture is a state policy . That's why the system parties approved and applied the torture and massacre policies. To illustrate, let's consider the pre-1980 period. There were Justice Party of [Suleyman] Demirel, MSP of [Necmettin] Erbakan, MHP of [Alpaslan] Turkes, the sources of today's DYP and ANAP; CHP of Ecevit, the predecessor of DSP. And all of them shared the power in different periods. To put it in another way, they were directly responsible from the torture applied against people. After 1980, ANAP, DYP, CHP, DSP, MHP, FP, BBP, DTP.. . were again in power and torture continued increasingly. Nothing has changed. That's to say, governments came and went in Turkey for years, torture has always continued. The government which will be established in the new parliament will also be a torturer one. Tortures, massacres, suppressions, dismissals, hunger, poverty will go on without loosing its speed. Neither this system nor its governments and parties have nothing else to give to the people. For the tortures and all kinds of inhumane applications to come to an end, it is a must to get rid of both this system and its parties. The people has to establish its own power. There's no other way. Are those who say that there is, going to expect a solution from the fascists of MHP? Are they going to expect democracy from Ecevit, the defender of civil martial law? The fascists from MHP, each of whom is responsible for a massacre, has nothing to give to our people. The only things they will do are new massacres, tortures, and increasing suppression. THE WAY OF GETTING RID OF PRICE RISES, CRUELTY AND TORTURE, THAT'S TO SAY FASCISM, IS THE JUSTIFIED STRUGGLE OF THE PEOPLE. NAME, SURNAME: Erol Ozbolat DATE OF BIRTH: May 4, 1963 JOB: Student CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Ankara, February 11, 1991 TYPES OF TORTURE: Keeping standing for a long time, beating, keeping under cold water, hanging, applying electric current, giving drugs to end will- power, sexual abuse, murder attempt in a lonely field. DURATION OF CUSTODY: 30 days CURRENT PLACE: Cankiri Prison On February 11, 1991, I surrendered to DGM (State Security Court), in order to make a previously planned conspiracy fall to the ground. Because, being unable to catch people's liberation's fighters, who were making armed actions in Ankara one after another, the DGM prosecutors, police, and MIT (National Intelligence Institution), were presenting me to the press as the person who realised the actions. Their aim was both to prove how handy they were and also to murder me after my exposure. To not to allow this, I surrendered. Birtan Altunbas, who was taken into custody with the same reason was murdered by torture just because he did not accept to join the conspiracy. The fact that Birtan Altunbas was murdered by torture has been proved by the medical report received from the Forensic Medicine. Thereby it has emerged that the DGM prosecutors, the police, and MIT would use any method to be able to continue with the conspiracy. Therefore, I informed the public by a press release I had made before I surrendered. My statement was published in January 24 issue of Gunaydin newspaper. But the owners of conspiracy insisted on the conspiracy and continued to present me as the "perpetrator" of the armed actions in the press. Upon this, on February 11, 1991 I went to DGM Chief-prosecutor with my attornies and surrendered. DGM prosecutor Nusret Demiral took my testimony and delivered me to the Political Branch of the Police Headquarters. I was taken to the torture center called DAL (Deep Research Laboratory), and the tortures began. I was kept under custody and tortured in this torture center, to where I was taken while my eyes were blindfolded, for 30 days even though the official duration of custody was 15 days. I was kept standing for days, I cannot remember how many. I was subjected to beating. Then, I was tied to a stretcher and kept under cold water. I was hanged, wetted and given electro shocks. Because I lost my notion of time, I do not know on which day of custody these tortures were made to me. However, I think on the fourth or the fifth day, they, by force, gave me a drug in the form of a tablette. They wanted to destroy my will power. Each torture session ended when I was just about to faint, and I was taken to the cell by being dragged on the ground. I was subjected to sexual abuse by hand during these tortures. The most frequent torture was my being taken outside every night, and being poured a bucket of cold water over my head every 10 or 15 minutes. These torture sessions continued till the moment I was about to freeze and consequently I fell down. During the late days of my custody, I was taken to a lonely field and asked to run away. They were aiming to murder me and later claim that I was shot while escaping. During these tortures, the conspiracy was tried to be supported piece by piece by the testimonies taken torture. From the beginning, the torture interrogations were directed by the DGM prosecutors who, themselves, came to the torture center. The DGM prosecutors who came to the torture center and joined the interrogations were Nusret Demiral, Talat Salk, Nuh Mete Yuksel. I was subjected to torture every time they wanted to make me sign the scenarios prepared by the DGM prosecutors. In the last 9- 10 days of the 1-month-custody, I was not tortured. They waited for the wounds of torture to heal. On the 30th day, I was taken to DGM and arrested on March 11, 1991, depending on the testimonies, which I was made sign by torture. Directing the tortures were not the only little masterpieces of the DGM prosecutors, they prepared fake documents as well. These documents are available in the trial file. As a result of this conspiracy I have been sentenced to death penalty. The policemen who tortured me are: Ibrahim Dedeoglu (MHP MP candidate in the last elections): Chief of the team . Even though we denounced him due to the tortures he made, a trial was not opened. Our denouncements are also available in the trial file. While the DGM prosecutors stopped their ears to our denouncements, Ibrahim Dedeoglu was sentenced to imprisonment because he tortured Imdat Halis and Mehmet Ozan, who were taken into custody due to TKP-B trial. Ali Riza Cicek: superintendent of Police. Alpaslan Baz: The policeman whose code name is "Minik." Red-haired, bluish- eyed, 1.70m tall, most probably Azerbaijani. Another policeman: 1.85 m tall, dark-skinned, normal weighted, speaking with an Erzurum dialect, and who looks like Fethullah Erbas. NAME, SURNAME: Ulas Gocmen DATE OF BIRTH: August 8, 1976 JOB: Student-marketing expert CUSTODY'S PLACE AND DATE: Istanbul/Sisli/Kustepe, April 28, 1996 TYPES OF TORTURE: Beating, death threat, twisting testicles, torture on the wounds of medical operation, swearing, insulting... DURATION OF CUSTODY: 10 days in hospital, 13 days at the Political Branch, 23 days in total. CURRENT PLACE: Sakarya Closed Prison I was continuing my education at Afyon Kocatepe University. In April 1995, I was searched by the police as a result of a police operation in Antep, where my family lives. The Antep Police knew that I was a revolutionist/democratic person. Therefore, I was taken into custody in 1991 , and kept under custody for 8 days. At the time I was searched, I came to Istanbul and worked in several jobs with my open identity. The last time, I was working in an office selling accounting books. On April 18, 1996, I had delivered the books to a client and was waiting for a taxi to pass to the Anatolian side. Just at that moment, there had been an armed attack on Kustepe Police Station, which was close. Surprisedly , I turned to the direction of the station, and tried to understand what was happening. They replied to the attack with guns from the police station. I fell to the ground when I was hit by the bullets of the policemen's guns. My one leg became numb. When I could not stand up, I asked for help from the people passing by. I was taken into custody in front of the eyes of the people who gathered around me. Because I was injured by the attack of the police, I was first taken to Sisli Etfal, then to Taksim First Aid Hospitals . Even on the way, they were saying "You made the attack." I had an operation at the hospital. A bullet had pierced through my arm, therefore it was put in a plaster cast. The bullet which had penetrated from my left rib cage, pierced through my stomach and intestine and stopped in my loins. There was a loss of sensation in my left leg. The bullet is still in my loins and the loss of sensation in my left leg still continues. Because, there were dead and injured policemen due to the attack, the policemen who came to the hospital reflected all their grudge. They were saying that my murder was obligatory, and swearing to those who took me to the hospital. Among them were torturers like Ayhan Cark?n, who became "famous" after the Susurluk [accident], and another one called "Mami" (Muhammed). They were resenting very much that they could not come to the place of event. They were blustering out threats such as "If we had came the first, we would have killed you." They asked questions about the attack and wanted me to testify. I told them that I did not know anything. They told me that in case I had not accept the responsibility of the attack and testify, I would have been made their guest at the [political] branch for 15 days and that it was impossible for me to resist torture with my wounds. They were hitting on my face and head with the wireless. Apart from that, I was subjected to verbal and physical attacks of the policemen during the 10 days I satayed at the hospital. On the second day of my stay, one of the chiefs of torturers, Hilmi Kalayci, asked me questions about the attack on police station and showed some pictures. He told me that if I testify, he will take the prosecutor to the hospital to take my testimony, or else, he will take me to the branch to torture. I told them that I have no relation with the event, and gave them the address of the place I worked. The torturers were not convinced with what I told, and they were trying to cast the blame on me. Due to my wounds and the operation I had, I was feeding with serum and I could not get even water through the mouth. As soon as I began feeding through the mouth, I was taken to the Political Branch of Istanbul Security Headquarters. According to the torturer policemen, I had to accept that I joined the attack, I received the order from someone in the prison, and so on. Thereby, the "hero" Turkish police would have quickly caught those responsible from the event(!). Because I recently had an operation and my arm was in plaster cast, they could not apply torture methods like hanging, and wetting with water. When they could not achieve what they wanted, the torturer chief Atilla Cinar told them "He is lying, press on him." That night we went to the house I was staying in. However, they could not find anything to "blame" me. Despite this, they sealed up my house as if it was an "organisation house." When we returned to the branch, they began to torture again. 5-6 torturers were squeezing my throat, stepping on my operation wounds and twisting my testicles. They also began to ask where the people responsible for the Sabanci action were. They told me that I was injured already, therefore they could do whatever they want to me, nobody would call them to account, and that they would have killed me if I had not testified in accordance with their wants. They were threatening me to take my family and torture them. Later, I learned that they had taken my father into custody and threatened him to not to look after me. I was subjected to the same tortures during my 13-day stay at the Team-1 table of the Political Branch. Later, I was arrested by the Istanbul DGM. Those who tortured me are: Ayhan Carkin, Hilmi Kalayc?, and the policemen called "Rambo," "Karaday?," "Hans," "Mami" (Muhammed), and "Husnu Mubarek." Due to the torturers I was subjected to and my treatments not being made, my left kidney decayed and consequently removed by an operation. Nothing was done to cure the loss of sensation in my leg. -- Ozgurluk.Org For justice, democracy and human rights in Turkey and Kurdistan!
