BUILDING A LOW-CARBON ECONOMY - THE PATHWAY FROM RECESSION

24th October 2009 at The Gallery, Alan Baxter and Associates, London EC1

Governments around the world have spent hundreds of billions to stimulate
their economies after the global financial crisis. Some of the measures
have been aimed at supporting the transition to a low carbon economy, but
many governments – including Britain's – have been miserly in providing
funds for such a "green stimulus".

With the Copenhagen climate negotiations rapidly approaching, this
conference takes a hard look at what further action is needed in the UK.
Leading researchers will discuss whether the latest government plans are
up to the job and whether more radical ideas – such as the conversion of
military industry or a "Green Jobs Charter" – are the way forward.

Plenary speakers include:

* Dr Tim Foxon, Sustainability Research Institute, University of Leeds on
The UK Low-Carbon Transition Plan: where are we going?

* Professor David Webb, Praxis Centre, Leeds Metropolitan University on
Arms Conversion for a Low-Carbon Economy

* Dr Gareth Dale, School of Social Sciences, Brunel University on
Green Jobs Charter: a trade union programme for the creation of one
million climate-change jobs

The conference will also feature a poster session. If you wish to apply to
present a poster, please send a brief description (not more than 100
words) to David Hookes <davidh at sgr.org.uk> or Hilary Chivall
<hilaryc at sgr.org.uk> a.s.a.p.
